Okay, I don't spend a lot of time looking for things to read on my Jeep, just books and quick once-over inspections of things. I was a little bored this afternoon, chatted all the way to Washington state on the CB, sharpened the chains for my chain saw and then wondered what was actually printed on the rear axle for IDs. I know what the top two are, but the others are a little confusing.... TOP RIGHT: 35C (with a strange symbol under it, perhaps a design from the mold....) TOP LEFT: 35C LOWER LEFT: 347 LOWER RIGHT: 5 Then on a tag that is attached by a cover bolt at about the 4:00 position... "11480" What does the 347, 5, 11480 numbers stand for and mean?

Okay, a couple back steps....
This is a replaced axle. It came from Jasper in Atlanta in 1998 and was put together and installed in Newark, NJ (Scary place for a southern white dude to break down....) I'm pretty sure that they used the origional gear ratio as they didn't touch the front and they are a paired set of gears....
So, it would have 3.47:1 gears (theoretically) and are most likely 3.55:1?
Question still remains regarding the 11480 and the 5.....

Unless you had the jeep re-geared, the stock ratio for a 91 yj with a 5 speed is 3.07. They never made a 3.47, they are either 3.55's or 3.07's.

I'd look at the tag on the front axle to determine the gears. If it hasn't been replaced, the tag on it should be the factory tag and it will give both the ratio and the gear tooth numbers for the ring and the pinion.

Front axle isn't much help. See below for legend for these line by lines.... All of these except for D are stamped or cast into the steel. Two lines of D are on a tag stamped with the information provided.... Line D2 could indicate that there are 3.07:1 gears, so, is the rear just a heavier case with the same gear set? Never had any problem with the front and rear competing with eachother. The tag on the rear axle, with the "11480" is from the origional rear axle, but doesn't give any help.... And whoever made the rear absolutely has the same 3:07 in it too. Now you have good proof of how high that ratio really is. Big Jim
