what kind of tachs do you guys run and where did you install them. im looking for somethine to fit in a pod or something that looks stock. i dont feel like looking for a bling bling tach. could i swap in a sr5 gauge cluster?

the sr5 cluster would be the way to go. thats what i did. very simple to install.

Easy swap, see my sig for a writeup for 2nd gens. For your truck, you'll want to get a pre-93 cluster unless you want to switch to an electric speedo. http://www.installdr.com/ has good instructions for taking apart your dash. Other than that, pretty much plug and play. Just watch out for the oil pressure sender caveat.

..If you didn't want to swap in a new cluster you can easily wire in a 2 1/2 in sunpro tach.. ( Quite a few of us are running them). Easily mountable to the plastic steering column.. Not the best pic, but it gives you an idea.

I went with the Sunpro Mini tach in my 90 model truck. Took the bracket, twisted it a half turn, and mounted it to the base of the A pillar. it fit snugly there just above the dash, was out of the way, and did not block driving vision or any other gauges.

i had the sunpro mini tach and i hated it it looks cheap and makes you look like ricer. but if your into that kind of thing thats cool, haha. it did a good job though but was a little too small.

I took a sunpro mini tach and a self tapping screw and put it on the plastic thing on the steering column. After about 6 years it's gotten pretty sun faded.

I have used both Sunpro and Autometer in my hotrod and Toyota. The Sunpro works just fine. The reason I went Autometer was for a shiftlight, which for the hotrod is a must have. In the Toyota it would be cool to have too, but I think the good old lightless tach is fine. I do, however, prefer a larger face. My Toyota has a 2 5/8s right now, which is barely big enough I think. I have a 5" monster mounted to the pillar of my Nova - very visible!

The Toyota's is mounted to the dash. Yes I drilled holes in a perfectly good dash - and I'll never look back; it's the best damn place for a tach and if I didn't care so much about the original dash in my Nova, I would have put it there on it too. Here are some pics:

Another vote for Autometer. I've got the same 2 5/8" all black tach and love it. I had mine mounted on the A pillar, but I just install three new Autometer gauges in a pod on the pillar and moved the tach to the steering column. It blocks the gas gauge a little but all you gotta do is move a little to see it. Sunpro just looks cheap, and ya get what ya pay for.
