I know this is a brain buster. But what is the black (plastic?) cube that is attached by a bracket to my 3.slow auto tranny? It hangs down really far and actually catches on things off road. Just curious, but it dosen't seem to do anything, it just has a metal bracket that bolts to the tranny case.

Thanks in advance

I am not exactly shure what you are talking about, but i think you described the jack point for the tranny.
It looks kinda like a motor mount attached to a bracket?
I had one on my 99 and just unbolted it and trashed it. Not suggesting to do that , but it is just in the way.
I thought it was plastic too at first, but i think it is metal composite of some sort, with a rubber bushing behind it.

It is a vibration damper. You can remove it and see if you notice any difference, if not leave it off.

As Joe says, it a vibration (tuned mass) damper as shown below...

hey thanks guys, I may try to pull it off. It is the lowest hanging point on my underbody. I am not sure if the bracket is bent or if it is just that way. I will see if I can snap a pic and see what you all think.
