Im having some tranny/clutch trouble, somewhere. Something is making a whirring noise from 2nd to 5th. First, Im going to replace the front side goodies, clutch, throwout, etc. If that dont work Ill swap the tranny. Im going to try and find a flywheel and have it resurfaced so I can minimize the downtime of the truck. Ive got an 84 with a G52, does anyone know what other tranny/year flywheels are compatable?

If it sounds more like a whine or light chatter, I'd be thinking solenoids. You might troubleshoot that a little more before you just go throwing parts at it.
When's the last time the tranny oil was changed? Just a couple thoughts there.

The noise itself is very hard to describe. The culprit always whirrs("whirrr", not really a whine "weeee" <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />)on accel or decel, and is extremely audible when downshifting. Lately the tranny has had to be caressed to go into 3rd-5th, especially at higher speeds; 35mph+. The tranny is always filled with redline MT90, and it was changed no more than 3 months ago, same time as rdiff. I dont think that im throwing parts at it, I believe 235K on a tranny and 105K on a clutch are very reasonable, consideriing the abuse they have seen. Ill let them die in peace, just not both at once.?

I have no clue as to what solenoids you are talking about?

umm. im thinkin rebuild on the tranny no? but i could be wrong. since it only does it in 2 gears it makes me point towards the tranny, not the flywheel or the clutch. the first thing i would of said would be drain and fill w/ some mt90 but you already did that so lets see what some experts have to say about this.

I think that its either the throwout or transmission bearings. Ive already ordered a clutch kit, and i think I have a line on a used transmission. I just wanted to be prepared and find a spare flywheel. I planned on taking it to the shop and having it resurfaced before I tore into the truck. That way, I didnt have to: pull the tranny, remove the flywheel, take the bus to the shop, wait 2-3hours while they resurface it(if im lucky), take the bus home, then put it all back together. Im going this week to the local junk yard and was hoping that someone knew which flywheels would interchange, considering the possibility I cant find another 84 G52.

If you have a 22R or 22RE engine, the flywheel is the same from at least 1977 to 1992 (except with the 22R-TE with the R151F trans). They all use an 8-7/8" disk and have the same overall diameter, mounting pattern and tooth count. If you want to upgrade the clutch a little bit you can use the 93 -'95 flywheel that uses a larger 9-5/16" disk. I just put a flywheel from a '95 22RE on my '85 22R motor and installed a clutch kit for '93 -'95 22RE's and it's working great. JT Outfitters sells a clutch kit on eBay with disk, pressure plate, T/O bearing, pilot bearing and alignment tool for $97.95. It's a Daikin with a Japanese Nachi T/O bearing and a Taiwan pilot bearing. Autozone wanted $129 for a Duralast set with a limited lifetime warranty, but I'd rather deal with a toyota specialist and fellow enthusiast like Mike at JT or Marlin Czajkowski, especially if the price is competitive.

About the problem you described though, it sounds like a transmission problem. If it was the clutch, I think it would happen mo metter what gear you had the trans in. -- Matt
