I've had a hanger "hidden" on my roof rack for a couple years now...I just bend a 2" L at the bottom, and shove it down into the door along the window...after awhile, you get good at it...last time I was timed, and it took me 30 seconds to push the bar down to unlock the door...Do I have a "General II" Montero? I been thunkin' it was a GENERATION II all this time. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

The question was how to shut off the engine.
Anyway, it's probably better left running while you call a locksmith (if you don't have a coat hanger or a slim-jim) unless the truck's in an enclosed space and a child is inside the truck, because (as you say) the coil is still energized - not a good thing and a great way to burn up a coil or other ignition components.

You can pop the hood by reaching up under the grill and get a finger inside the hood latch and pop it then disco the coil. I have done this not because I locked my keys inside(I can't I have no roof) but because the hood cable came out. This happened on 2 monteros so i know it will work on any gen 1 havn't tried gen 2. I am crazy but I dont have the cajones to stick my hand past the fan, radiator, belts, pulleys etc of engine that is running and try to fiddle around and find the hood latch.

I can't beleive I hafta be the first one to suggest the simple quick guaranteed way to shut off that engine!
crawl underneath.
Pick the oil filter, or drain plug.
unscrew it.
You won't waste much more precious gasoline, after the oil drainsout. Just be careful not to get any on ya, its a carcinogenic agent, ya know. Norm

Mentioned before, I'm thinking the quickest, most effective, and least damaging (for a carb anyway) would be pinching/putting a kink in a fuel line or disconnecting power to the electric fuel pump (if you have one).
