There are a lot of OBDII scan tools out there that will read/reset the "CEL" failure codes on the Sportage. It all depends what you want to do with it when analyzing the ECU codes. I own the Actron 9145 (sold at PEP Boys at about $179.00 with rebate) which does all the basics but also lets you view "live" data while the engine is running such as the throttle position sensor (TPS) or the reading that the mass airflow sensor (MAF) is sending. It also allows you to see the "Freeze Data" when a "CEL" occurs, which is saying that at the time the ECU displays a "CEL" it also records different sensor values into memory which can latter be displayed for troubleshooting.
I had looked at different OBDII scanners out there before buying this one. The programs that run on a computer laptop you can't beat but they were kind of bulky for me as I may want to use it while I am driving and glancing at the seat next to the driver to view a laptop reading can be deadly. The basic scanners were OK for displaying "CEL" failure codes and clearing them but don't really help in troubleshooting why the problem is occurring. You kind of get what you pay for. I figure that as demand increases you should see more sophisticated scanners appear with cheaper prices.
I am still learning on how to decipher the sensor readings that are displayed.
For around $100 Autozone has 2 different models of modules that attach to your OBD-II port. What you do is plug them in and drive. They continously record various reading that you can download later to your computer and graph it all out from the comfort of the office chair. One of the models would record I think as many as 20 reading at the same time. I think that is what I'm going to get - seems likr the biggest bang for your buck and you could just leave it plugged in all the time. If something funny ever happens just pop it out and take a look at what was going on.
