Personally I'd be suspicious because of the low price. Most OBD-II readers I've seen start at about $100.
The codes are standardized across all vehicle makes. But the protocols for pulling the codes from the ECM's are not. If a code reader says "universal" it has all the protocols built in and it will work across all makes. This reader doesn't state that.

There are a lot of OBDII scan tools out there that will read/reset the "CEL" failure codes on the Sportage. It all depends what you want to do with it when analyzing the ECU codes. I own the Actron 9145 (sold at PEP Boys at about $179.00 with rebate) which does all the basics but also lets you view "live" data while the engine is running such as the throttle position sensor (TPS) or the reading that the mass airflow sensor (MAF) is sending. It also allows you to see the "Freeze Data" when a "CEL" occurs, which is saying that at the time the ECU displays a "CEL" it also records different sensor values into memory which can latter be displayed for troubleshooting.
I had looked at different OBDII scanners out there before buying this one. The programs that run on a computer laptop you can't beat but they were kind of bulky for me as I may want to use it while I am driving and glancing at the seat next to the driver to view a laptop reading can be deadly. The basic scanners were OK for displaying "CEL" failure codes and clearing them but don't really help in troubleshooting why the problem is occurring. You kind of get what you pay for. I figure that as demand increases you should see more sophisticated scanners appear with cheaper prices.
I am still learning on how to decipher the sensor readings that are displayed.

I purchased this one and it works fine for most cars and trucks including Ford, Chevy, Saturn, Chrysler etc but it DID NOT work for the sportage - it could not link to the ECU for some reason. Mark <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />

I am still learning on how to decipher the sensor readings that are displayed. For around $100 Autozone has 2 different models of modules that attach to your OBD-II port. What you do is plug them in and drive. They continously record various reading that you can download later to your computer and graph it all out from the comfort of the office chair. One of the models would record I think as many as 20 reading at the same time. I think that is what I'm going to get - seems likr the biggest bang for your buck and you could just leave it plugged in all the time. And all it does it pull codes, nothing else. But it has worked with every vehicle I tried it on so far....Kia, Saturn, and Nissan. I'm assuming it will work just fine on my Honda but I haven't tried it yet. The prices have come down. The scan tool I have has been discontinued by Actron but they have other units with the same or more features for less money. Even JC Whitney has Actron scan tools. You know Sun Gauges? That's the same company (Actron). So you know they are respected and dependable. I've never bought anything on Flea-bay. And I'm not sure I ever will. Too many scams and it's almost impossible for E-bay to police.

I got the el cheapo at Harbor Freight - I wouldn't buy from ebay either, I need to feel it, touch it etc before I buy.

Got it on the weekend,works good,scans and erases on both my Kia's(2000 Sportage,2002 Kia Rio)links fine to both vehicles plus also runs diagnostics on the sensors avalable, while driving. Am happy with purchase.The actual model of the scanner is, Innova 3100 Digital OBDII code reader.100 bucks cheaper buying from the states instead of here in Canada. Any way Thanks for all the replys.
