I've honestly never takin it over 3000 rpm because floored in 5th, down hill it won't rev more then 3000, so i'm stuck at 55, but the engine and transmition don't seem to be working hard. To put it simpler if I had a 6th gear i think i would be able to reach at least 60. I checked the distributer cap today and one of the "nipples" was really rusty. Could that cause a loss of power?
Thanx

Well 94 that engine should be shifted at 4000 rpm! Start out in first and do not shift till 4000 then 2 then 3 and when in 4th LEAVE it in there till you reach 4000 rpms..
I betcha you are shifting it like you had a big V-8 in it!
That engine LIKES rpms!

Any idea how much a gear swap would cost, if i were not to do it myself...?

unfortunatly gear changes are not an easy task. Unless you have done it before or you are REALLY skilled with tools and reading directions, you should let a pro do it.

Try and figure out what is wrong with the motor before you decide to swap gears.

I know this could be a stupid question but would you have to change the gears in both axels?

I tried your suggestion and the engine shounds like its about to explode. It could be because my jeep has a flowmaster. But are you sure it can handle that much rpms? I did get it up to bout 70. I guess i was following the shift light.
Thanx

Not if you never use 4WD! Yes, the gears must be the same ratio front and rear. Very important! There are no stupid questions on this board! Besides, the dumber the question, the more likely you'll get the right answer!

The engine is desinged to run up to red line, i would not hold it at red line for extended periods of time, but that 4 cyl. could be held at 3700 all day long with out damaging it.

Have you done the simple things yet like a tune up suggested by Jeepete??

C'mon man, you can't expect everyone to answer your questions without taking some action on the suggestions you receive.

Go get yourself a service manual and learn how the basics are done first. You're asking about high dollar upgrades/improvements but don't seem to know how to change the spark plugs/cap/rotor to at least give your Jeep a fighting chance with the engine it has.

Sounds kinda like asking about how to do open heart surgery for a cut on the finger. Ok so I exagerate, but you get the idea.

My God, I wonder how people nowadays would function without the internet. We've become a society totally dependant on others instead of learning for ourselves.

Rant off.
