Why not just hard-lock the front axle? I mean... if you had a decent set of manual locking hubs... 4WD is really NOT necessary for the vast majority of 'wheeling' unless you're going fast...
I'm the type that likes to go slow. So why not just weld the front up or something?

Obviously not.
What reason would there be for NOT locking the front axle vs leaving the diff open? Since there are NO lockers ANYWHERE that I'm aware of for my front axle, why not just get the thing locked permanently? I don't use 4WD unless I'm wheeling, and I mean wheeling pretty hard (not talking dirt roads here) so... what would the harm be? For street driving you just run 2WD with your hubs set to 'free'.

Because it makes your vehicle do unwanted thing:
Crabwalk on side hills and slick rocks. Difficult to turn on anything but mud. Hell on your parts in high traction like moab slick rock.

Hmm. Thanks that's exactly what I was looking for. Any help for the open front diff situation on a rig like mine?

You can swap in an LSD from the rear of a Starion/Conquest.. there is talk about it here and there if you search around.

i have welded front and rear axles.it turns like crap on hard surfaces but i love the traction.it just take some getting use to.and you must be willing to deal with the consquences(turning, and bad snow habits).but if you are the traction is amazing.i just point my truck and it will climb almost anything.

Considering the limited options available to the 2.6 rigs, I chose to take out the front diff and put in a front diff from a '91, then put the ARB in. I like the flexibility it provides...open most of the time but locked when I want it to be locked.

i would of done that if i could of affoerded it in this life time.i have a buddy who is a welder/fabricater that has done welded diffs before and since i just got the gears before i put them in i had him weld them up for me.i figure if i did not like the front welded it is only about 2 hours to swap it out,and 4.6 gears are easy to find.but i do love the rear welded.i would never go back to a open rear again.
