Getting the Wheeling Fever
I know this is probably going to get a lot of flack, but I gotta ask...

SO has anybody thoght about the possibility of putting one of Jeeps new Turbo diesels in a pickup or 4runner. It is a 2.8L, and they claim 160hp and 280lb/ft, plus 22-27 mpg. I know that right now they are only avaliable in the liberty's, and come backed with a 5 speed auto, but I am sure it could be done.

I recently read about a SEMA wrangler that made use of a similar setup, march 05 issue for anyone interested.

I know that it is not a very cost effective swap since they are so new and all, but I just thought I would throw it out there and see what kind of respnse I garnered.

Please don't hate me guys but when I read the numbers, I just couldn't help but wonder, I mean think about it 300lb/ft not sure what I would break, but it sure would be fun to find out

Let me know what you think.

well...
that would be pretty sweet....300ftlbs of torque....25 mpg, i would kill for that kind of power...
but didn't/doesn't toyota make like a 2.5L Diesel 4 banger as well? i think they do, not sure of the numbers....but it would probably bolt right up to toyota 5 speed trannys...oh well, i have never done a gas to diesel conversion, and im not sure of if it would even bolt up....im rambleing again...

Oh it's OK. That engine probably not even made by Jeep, so there would be no reason to be ashamed.

Not that I know for sure. I just know that a lot of diesel engines are outsourced by other manufactures.

If not now, definately in the future. The next big global manufacture of cars is going to be them.

I think toyota does offer a diesel in other markets around the world, why they haven't noticed the trend and tried one over here in the states is beyond me.

The reason I was thinking of a newer diesel instead on the old toy diesel is modernization. The newer diesel would run cleaner, maybe even a biodiesel modification could be done, and the parts would be more readily avaliable for a newer engine. Plus with the way the aftermarket has attacked diesels as of late, there would surely be power upgrades in the near future.

And you are right, I don't think it is a jeep motor, the one in the wrangler article was an IVECO, I think. So i guess it wouldn't really be sacrilegious.

Update: It is a Detroit Diesel. If you guys want to check it out here is the link: http://www.allpar.com/model/jeep/liberty-2005.html

That would be pretty cool, Why is it OK to put a Chevy or Ford engine into a Toyota , but anything Jeep would be "Sacrilegious". I do not understand, to me a Powerplant is a Powerplant!!!!

Initially it would be expensive, until they started showing up in salvage yards a bit more regularly. I don't see why not, would make a sweet little project. Would be curious as to what other transmissions would bolt up behind it, though.

My favorite vehicle of all the ones I have seen on this site is the tan 1985 4runner with the Japanese diesel engine running on biodiesel, R151F transmission, and dual electric lockers. That is my dream vehicle but light years beyond my mechanical abilities.

There's a link to this vehicle on Brian's website, and a note that a full write-up will happen at some point (hint, hint...).

actually it is made by Benz. a cheaper way would be to get a used benz turbo diesel and have at it. that way no computers or such...........Karl
