I'm about ready to pull the V6 out of my 98 Amigo. The manual says to pull the transmission first (5spd manual trans).
What have other people been doing? Pull the trans or leave it in place? I would like to leave the trans in place, and hopefully suspend it from the ratchet strap I have wrapped around the trans and the frame. I need to be able to move the vehicle after I get the engine out. Limited work space...
as it is right now I need to go over it again to figure out what wires and hoses I missed, undo the engine mounts, seperate the engine from the trans and hopefully pull.
thanks,
Mike W

You are supposed to remove the tranny due to limited engine bay space/length.
When I pulled mine I left the tranny hanging on the crossmember but others have used ratchet straps to suspend it in the tunnel.
With the tranny suspended and the axles disconected then the truck can be pushed/pulled wherever you need it.

ok, my engine is out.
Heres what I found. The transmission can stay in the vehicle but needs to be shifted backawards far enough to be mostly disconnected from the engine. The Engine can only move forward about 2 inches which isn't quite enough. Plus my 2" body lift allowed me to raise everything higher than normal.
Things I would suggest for this job:
A really tall hoist, that way you can leave your big tires on and still have almost enough room to wiggle around underneath on your creeper.
beg borrow or buy a tranny jack. That trans/t-case is big heavy and awkward. It also seems to need to be moved to get the engine out.
Pulling the wiring harness with the engine wasn't really too bad.
The Barney song doesn't seem to work from the other side of the transmission. maybe if I sang it backwards
rent someone who's done it before

Getting right to it I see You mentioned putting a used engine in its place... but are you planning on still going through the old engine just to see what you can find?

yep, before I take it in I plan to flip it over and pull the oil pan and take a look-see. Who knows, I could rebuild it and make more than I would get for a core charge
