So you're saying I've got a chance with the floor jack! woohoo!
Ok, I know, I'll rent the tranny jack. It was just a thought. Actually, I'll compare rental to buying one from Harbor Freight or Northern Tool.
Yep, definitely need the other half of the FSM (got the engine half for $12 off ebay).
Thanks for the help.

Body Damage is Cool

I did it w/ 2 floor jacks and a helping hand at the crucial "heavy" points. It sucked Def get a tranny jack, and the strap if you're doing it alone.

i used a forklift w/ a pallet on it to take it out lol. but to put it in i had about 3 of my buddies help me. still was a pain. but to install the tranny make sure you get some old head bolts and cut the heads off of them and slot the ends of them. install them in the tranny bolt holes so your tranny lines up easier and you dont damage it. but they do sell tranny jack attachments for floor jacks at northern tool and equipment...i dont know how well they work but id give them a try. also i heard a motorcycle jack is about the same thing as a tranny jack.

You can also get away with 2 floor jacks, and 2 ratchet straps.
Use a floor jack to support the tranny when you remove the crossmember, and then put a ratchet strap across from each framerail. When you disconnect the bellhousing, use the jack again for support, then add a ratchet strap across the front.
After you have the tranny supported by the straps, use the jack to support the rear of the engine. Then you can get another jack to assist you in lowering the tranny. Release the lock on one strap, and lower the jack until there is tension. Them repeat back and forth between the straps until it is all the way down.
Installation is the reverse method, only you don't need the jacks to get it up... Only to support it when you reset the straps (you will run out of cranking room, and have to pull the excees back through the straps.
This is how I have gotten away with removing and installing trannys for years... All without a tranny jack, and no partner needed.
