Hi guys, got a question for ya.
I have an 88 Trooper 2.6 5 speed that is completely bone stock. Since I don't drive it any more and can't bring myself to actually sell it (it's been in the family since it was new), I've decided to turn it into an offroad rig.
I've got a friend that's selling his 33x14.0 Super Swamper TSL's and 15" aluminum wheels from his 81 Yota because he just bought a new truck with 35" groundhogs and he's willing to sell them to me for $200 with the tires already mounted and balanced. Now the bolt pattern is the same so I know they'll mount up good, but I'm a bit concerned with the width of these tires. Now the wheels have a huge offset (don't know the number, but i can find out later) so it should be OK, but do you all see any problems with these tires fitting?
I know I'll probably have to cut out the fenders a bit, but are there any other modifications I'll have to do?

33's that wide and you're definitely going to spend some time removing sheet metal. Depending on the wheels, you may also have issue with frame rubbing.

Yeah, I'm willing to cut out the fenders a little bit and the tires are wider than I'd like, but it's such a good deal I can't pass it up. The wheels alone are worth probably 4 times more than what he's asking for the whole package.
I'm going to test fit them in a few days to see whats up and if it looks feasible then I'll have the guy help me cut out the fenders a bit.
The frame rubbing part is kinda concerning me though, but It shouldn't be too big of the problem considering how the wheels are spaced. Ah well, I'll probably post pics on here of the test fit to see what you guys think. I basically just want some cheap boggers to mess around with because my stock 275/35's just won't cut it on many of the trails around here.

frame is the only thing it will rub that you can't cut/smash out of the way. you'd probably need a 2"-ish backspaced wheel to clear it. for reference, my 35x12.50's on 15x8 3.75" backspaced wheels rub the frame at full steering lock.

wide tires really beat the snot out of your drivetrain. If you plan on wheelin it hard, expect snapped front axles and lots of blown steering parts. If your buddy just wants to get rid of the them, buy em and sell the tires. Keep the wheels if they are 10" wide or less. Buy somthing 12.5" wide or narrower, your truck will appreciate it. If you really want a swamper, i think the 34x10.5 ltb's are awsome, and you could probably use your stock rims.
body lift would help too.

Ok, talked to my friend today and the wheels are 15x12.5 with a whopping 6" of back spacing. Of course I'm going to test fit them first and I'm sure we're going to have to cut the fenders out a bit, but that's no problem for me.
As for the 14" wide tires beating up my axles, I'm not too concerned about it. I'm going to have these tires for strictly weekend offroading and nothing too serious. I still have my set of 275/35's for street use, but then again I hardly ever drive the trooper any more. It's been sitting for a while and only gets driven like once every two months or so.

you will probably rub your frame if there's that much backspacing. I've never tried, but I'm sure you can adjust your steering stops.
If it was me, I'd sell the wheels. If they are weekend only tires, put them on some cheap 15x8's. With this setup, they will wear badly on the street, BUT you should be able to air way down and not have to worry about blowing the tire off the bead.

With that much backspacing you might have problems with the tire rubbing on the frame. With lower backspacing the tire sticks out more, with more backspacing the tire will be closer to the frame. I have 3-5/8" backspacing and it just about prefect. That means those tires will be like over 2" closer to the frame then mine, they probably won't work, but I have 15x10's so its different. And I'm running 13.5" wide tires, and there pretty wide, hope that helps any. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

i think he means offset, not backspacing does anyone even make a wheel with 6" backspacing??
get rid of the rims. i personally would get rid of the tires too. i know you dont care if you wear stuff out, but, i do belive that you will break enough stuff to offset the cost of getting those wheels and tires cheap. if its just a woods beater, you can get cheap 8" steel rims. you will be able to run a much wider range of tires.

the wheels are 15x12.5 with a whopping 6" of back spacing. IMHO, pass this one up. A "good deal" is only really a good deal if the item fits your needs... and it doesn't sound like these are going to.
