you don't.

First I should appologize for being slow to realize you guys are thinking in terms of daily drives, where mine is a street legal, but definitely trail rig. You "might" drive it to a trail.

I was advocating getting rid of power brakes, and thus no longer needing that alternator which is mounted low and which I have ruined 2. cheapest rebuild I could find on the internet is $153.

I am now running a second $65 65amp GM alternator up where the air conditioning compressor was, and the lower alternator/vac pump is now just an idler.

I went with a single wire self exciting alternator.

My setup is highly modified, simplified. It is inspected and street legal, but it is no way a daily driver.

doubt the c223T ancillary parts will be of much use on a 2.8. Then again, they may be the same for all I know. Jerry LeMond is the expert here.

The c223T has an excellent fuel filter/separator and I retained it. The c223T glow pulg controler is a marvel. Took a while to completely understand it. really cool.

I just noticed you said this is a daily drive you are building and not a trail rig (primary).

Be sure you get a starter with it.

If you'd care to share any info on the workings of the glow controller, I'd appreciate it. I'll probably be incorporating it in the conversion.

Glad to hear the filter/separator is a good design. I think I'll stick with it.

Gas 88 Trooper broke down today (again) -- looks like I'd better order that diesel engine!

Just a few thoughts on this conversion.
Glow plugs..the 2.23 uses 6v glow plugs I believe. If you wire 12V directly to them with a switch, they will burn out. Be sure to use the resistor setup. (I burned a set up jumping directly to the bus bar.

Fuel filter..If you are going to run veggie in it, you might consider using the filter off the diesel Tempos/Topaz/Focus from the 1986 area. These had a heater in the filter. I have seen several of these in junk yards.

Vacuum source...Also, off the above Ford (Mazda) engine, they had an electric vacuum pump which was mounted down between the bottom of the radiator and engine. I know there are other electric vacuum pumps on the market.

Just some thoughts.

Good Luck,
Max

Max -- Thanks for the tips. I hope to incorporate the factory glow controller, which I assume will include the resistor(s). Now to find out the operating voltage of the 4JB1-T plugs...

The vac pump and filter tips are useful as well. I was considering an electric pump if it turned out that the factory pump was not useable.

I should be ordering the engine this week. Just spent an hour or so with the shop vac cleaning the Trooper out. My rust-free (virtually) 88 had been used on a farm, and was full of hay and dog hair. Smells a bit, too, but the upholstery is in great shape. I think a steam cleaner would work wonders.

Next is to pull the engine and transmission, do a bit of body work and rustproofing and get the brakes and other chassis bits freshened up while I wait for the new driveline to arrive.

Depending upon the start cycle, the c223T will supply a lot of current if it is a cold engine for a few milliseconds, not long enough to burn anything out. a warmer engine upon restart, will have the lesser amperage applied to the glow plugs. (via the 2 relays combination) There is a special analog discrete circuit "computer" in the drivers kick panel, and two relays on the inside passenger side fender behind the filter assy. ON the glow plugs is a common strap with an additional strap which is a thermistor and this is what supplies the current resistance over time delay to the glow plugs.

It is really a cool and complex design. I prefer my 2001 CTD dodge ram blow dryer though to glow plugs!

I've managed to get hold of the factory manual for the '86 TD, and the glow system looks to operate exactly the way you describe it.

Even better, I've got similar documentation for the 4JB1-T, and it appears to share the same glow controller design.

I don't anticipate too many hassles adapting the C223-T system for use with the 4JB1-T.

Just as an update, my new engine/transmission has been loaded onto a container and should arrive in the U.S. around mid-June. Once the 86 TD parts arrive (within the next week or so, I imagine) I'll start on the process of pulling the old drivetrain, converting the fuel and electrical systems, and repairing a few areas of the body. Stay tuned ...

Are there any more of these available?

I'm not sure - there may well be. I am thinking the demand may be high if it turns out to be in good condition. I can't vouch for the outfit yet, as I haven't taken delivery of the engine, but my contact there has been knowledgeable and came recommended by another diesel enthusiast. If it happens that I'm being misled, they can take it up with Citibank...

Just a quick update -- just received word that the diesel engine will arrive in Florida this week. Should be time to begin the project in earnest in the next week or so. I also received a box of goodies (as was discussed above) from an 86 Trooper diesel, so I should have many of the necessary parts for the conversion. More later...
