Trooper ('87-'91) questions #594695 04/20/05 01:16 PM

A question or three.
1. Central locking is working and not working. Extrememly annoying. When it doesn't work, it might not work all day, or it might work again a few minutes after the lock-turning has finished. Anyone deal with this before?
2. Has anyone swapped out the old R12 gassed air-conditioning for a later model (Isuzu) system? Did everything fit and work ok? How much of the old system is R12 specific in component terms?
3. Does anyone over there have a Trooper from this period with three-point seat belts in the backseat? Was there ever such a model. I've seen two-point belts (waist only) and vehicles without belts at all, but never a three-point belt in a vehicle from the 87-91 timeframe. I'm wondering/hoping that if such vehicles existed somewhere all bodies have holes in the pillar for shoulder-level mounting.

Cheers,

RE #2: There are kits available fairly cheap for converting R12 over to 134a, mainly consisting of new fittings that screw into the existing R12 fittings on the high and low-pressure side. I converted mine over a couple of years ago.

RE #3: My '91 LS has a center lap-belt, and the outer belts are 3-point shoulder/lap belts.

Just another confirmation.
My 90 Trooper has been converted, works great.
The back seat has three-points on the window seats.

My 91 LS is a Canadian Trooper. It has the 3 pt shoulder belts too. But has NO A/C!

So, not to thread jack, but what kind of PITA is it to INSTALL an A/C system, old or new? And what is the benefit of one or the other?

I know that people talk about "qualified people" being the only ones who should mess with A/C but c'mon...
Thanks in Advance...or Pep Boys...or Napa

1. Central locking? Are you referring to automatic locking front hubs? If so, you might try disassembling, cleaning and relubricating them. A sure fire solution is to replace them with manual locking hubs.

Buy a Trooper. You'll be glad you did.

If your talking about the hubs, I would change to the manual locking hubs. I did it last night and it only took an hour to do both. I am planning on taking some pictures and posting in the next couple days.

The A/C, I was able to find some of the r12 so I had it checked out and that put in. Nice and cold. Definately helps here in AZ.

And my '88 has 3pt on the window seats also.

Thanks for the replies so far, especially Don who was on it straight away.

I have to move away from R12. I can get it, but it isn't the issue. I can no longer use it. I have to flush it out (if there's any left in there) and use something newer. I just wanted to know if the system has specific R12 components in it that must be swapped out. The fittings are a given. And what parts from later Isuzu's are an easy swap in.

I have never seen a Trooper of this vintage with 3 point restraints in the rear. There are either around-the-waist 2 point restraints across the rear (window, center, and window seats), or no restraints at all. I'm a member living in Japan, remember. What I was after was evidence that there were 3 point restraints somewhere (anywhere) and that there (therefore) might be anchor mounts already there in the piller for the above-the-shoulder bolt. Isuzu has this strange way of having every vehicle body made with all the possible mounts for any part. Of the same model and vintage, that is. Thanks for the info.

And, finally, I mean central locking doors. Not hubs. It's enough to be a nightmare. When you've never had it, you don't notice. When you are used to it, it's a real pain having to deal without it. In this case, it works and doesn't work in equal portions, and half the time it doesn't work the locks spring up sometime later to surprise you. Doesn't matter where you first unlock the car, driver's side, passenger side, or rear swing door. Always the same. It has just started doing it. Where is the central locking control? Is it something fouled with dust and grime? Is it an earth problem? Is there interference in any rod in any door doing it? Or is the central control unit ready for the bin? I'm just looking for a 'common fault' across the board, as a starting point of reference.

Cheers,

--Bighorn--
