You can always do a poor mans patent and send the idea with all the details to yourself via the post office. When you receive it, do not open the envelope & you now have a dated document showing your idea.

I just found out that my coworkers sister is a patent attorney. He suggests documenting your idea and having each page notarized ($10+ depending on how the notary charges) or doing a provisional patent (will be good for a year but you must complete a patent search & file a formal patent application within that year).
