Anyone know what (if anything) the differences are between the two are? I grenaded the rear end in my '95 troop trying to figure out if '96 will fit. TIA

They should both be Isuzu Corporate 12 Bolt axles with disc brakes. I don't remember off hand which year went to a slightly wider axle, but I'm thinking it was later than '96.

What exactly did you grenade? Potentially, you might be able to pull just the third member and replace that, rather than the entire axle, and that should be the same from one to the other, barring a possible LSD question.

I guess some history is in order... about 2 wks ago I chnged diff fluid and found what appeared to be the very tip of a gear tooth and the "normal" very fine metallic powder, I refilled and crossed my fingers, figuring with 110k mi on it and some abuse it was just a fatigue fracture, and crossed my fingers.I don't know what exactly grenaded yet, haven't had time to tear into it left wheel slipping, jerking, crunch bang, under load especially while turning. NO LSD on this truck. On draining the fluid this time found LARGE abount of fine metal powder and bright shiny flakes of metal who knows where from. I was thinking of replacing the whole thing beause I was under the impression that changing the center section required special tools/skills for proper setup. BTW thanks for your quick reply

If you swap in an entire replacement 3rd member, it does not require any special tools. If you put in just a new carrier (like when adding an ARB locker or LSD), then the ring gear must be set up on the new carrier and everything shimmed out... which does require special tools.

From the symptoms you are describing (metal pieces/shavings and trouble turning), it sounds like you may have broken a spider gear.

The '96 and '95 have interchangability. Does your '95 have fender flares? If so, the 95 and 96 axles are the same width. The only differnces could be between ABS possibilits (rear vs 4wheel).

I appreciate all the responses I'll update, hopefully with pics, when I tear down and fix it

at some point in '97 is when the rear diff changed somehow so the '96 should be okay. i'm not even sure what changed, but for some reason, some '97 diffs can't be fitted with an arb locker.
