my 94's 5spd... I have to put it in 4th or 1st then Reverse. rev is not the smoothest engagment in toyotas. my Supra was the same way. just be patient and play with it. you'll get it. I don't even notice it anymore. Only when I 1st got my supra then again in my 4runner.
