OK I've scoured the board for info. My tranny has a hard time upshifting, especially the 1-2 shift but downshifting is smooth. at around 2500 rpm i have to let off the gas pedal and then it will upshift. So far I've checked the kickdown cable, lubed it with atf, dropped the pan and changed the filter and its still a problem. So i'm thinking it's the governor. Does anyone know where it is and if i can just give it a good cleaning or do I need a new one?

I'm saving a valve body cleaning for last resort.

same problem with my 93, i tried adjusting the cable, it helped, but still, sometimes you really have to let off for it to shift, other times it shifts good. ive drove it that way for a decent amount of miles now, nothing has changed.. at least it isnt worse. last time i asked about this, i was told to adjust the cable.. hm...

Hey Doug, I see you have a AT for sale. One of the guys from PA is looking for a AT. Can't remember who. If I find who I will include it here.

doug, from what i've been reading the symptoms suggest its the governor since the km148 doesn't use a vacuum regulator (wish it did). but i was thinking of going the 'don't ask don't tell' route. sounds like it might work. It actually doesn't bother me, but would be nice to have a smooth shift. not to mention resale would be difficult.

The governor is located in the tailhousing of the KM148. The xfercase and the tailhousing will have to be removed to get to it. It can stick, and cause erratic shifting. They can be cleaned, but they can also wearout. If I didn't do this alot, I would say for most of you, I would get a new one if available. Unless you like to R&R your xfercase for fun. If you decide to clean out your valve body, Make sure you buy all valve body gaskets required. I would also recommend having a manual easily available. FSM or ASTG manuals.

Get the vehicle going about 45 mph in high gear (not overdrive). Shut off the engine while still in drive and in a cadence, depress the accelerator to the floor three times. (1-2-3) After this, put selector in neutral and restart. Continue driving, if the shift improves, repeat same procedure. Let us know if this corrects the problem.

ive allready tried to adjust the throttle cable like in that picture. this weekend i will try to do the drive 45 then shut off procedure, and if it dont work i will try the other stuff. i also cant start mine in park, i can only start it in neutral. i allready seen on here somewhere how to fix it, its just the matter of doing it. thanx for the help, i hope this helps both me and v6lsmonty.

p.s. the tranny im selling, its the lock converter model.

Thanks charlie.. school has got my funds all tied up right now. Lee_Raider hooked me up with a tranny, but if I can hold off long enough I will probably buy that lockup model transmission.

i havent had a single bite on the tranny or xfercase. so more than likely the tranny will still be here when you need it. im thinking about putting some of the other stuff on ebay, but im going to keep the tranny aside for a couple months incase you need it.
