One of the first "fixes" I did on my '91 Troop was to replace the 5spd shifter boot- it was a real pain to get installed! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" /> So, if removing boots and shifters is the easiest way to refill tranny/txfr case oil is there a secret to said boot installation???
I used a pump to refill my tranny/txfr case and the only issue was that the Lucas tranny stuff got cold and was really REALLY hard to get in there. The oil was kinda cold but it was pretty easy. One other issue- the lying on your side and trying to get enough clearance to operate the pump was a pain too. Hence, the question: what is the easiest way to reinstall shifter boots? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

I forget what Curtis calls it, but something like the shift boot shuffle <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> They are a pain, but easier with the carpet out of the way. I have some lift and larger tires on the troop, so I can slide under and roll around without jack stands even <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I can't sit up though, so I need more lift. If I can manage to get a DD then I can put the troop on the modding block next <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

As for boots, I just push them in the best I can from the top, and then crawl under and tug the lip into place. It is a PITA at first, but it works. A BL is a help, but I can imagine you could do it without, just hug the tranny and use both hands.
As for getting fluid via other manners, for topping off, I will use one of those screw on on/off thingies with the long tube on it. Put it on the bottle, get it into place, lift the bottle as high as possible and then open it up. Squeeze until the bottle is empty or the tranny is full.
I found the pumps to be a royal PITA, plus they are a mess to clean up afterwards.

I used my cheap-o spring-plunger hand-pump pump last night... I don't see the difficulty, and I was pumping 90-weight which is thicker, stinkier, and stickier.
Yeah, I needed a rag to cleanup, but no big deal. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I'd rather do the hand pump anyday as well. The boots suck even with a body lift.
I pump the fluid in whatever I'm filling and I keep my hand pump in a plastic storage container, so clean up isn't an issue. Just chuck it into the storage bin and forget about it till you need it again.

Well to get my trans filled I use a regular garden sprayer that you just hand pump to pressurize and then you get a constant even flow of fluid to whatever you need. You can get one for under $10 from most places. You might have to modify the tip with a different fitting or tubing to snake it into your application, but this might help. OK, so Mando's method with the sprayer worked for me. The old oil needed to be changed, but it wasn't milky or anything that I could tell, just kinda thick. I put her all back together and it is still leaking. I can't tell if it is from the front driveshaft seal, or the seam in the housing where it bolts together. How difficult is that front seal to change????

Ah, we are narrowing it down.
The front output seal is not too difficult to change, but it will take either a big breaker bar to remove the nut or an impact gun. Putting it back will also require it to be torqued to some pretty hefty number.
It is smart to also replace the nut. It is a staked nut and reuse is not advisable as it will screw up the threads.

So I will just remove the front drive shaft and change the seal from that direction then??? I didn't look at it too closely when I had the Tranny out for the clutch job.
My wife is supposed to have our baby this week, so I guess it is going to just leak in the driveway for a week or two <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
