OK so my Rodeo finally runs.... No idea why, it just came back to life by itself.

So I'm looking into improving its off-road capabilities. Can't say I'm a hard-core off-roader, I just want to be able to drive up to my fishing holes and have a little fun. I'm looking into rear locker... electric locker to be more specific. Any comments on em? Any model even available for my 91 Rodeo?

I think I'll make that my first real off-roading mod.

I've done a little research on the Detroit electrac and it seems like a better deal than an ARB because when unlocked it still works as a posi unit. The ARB is just an open Diff. Now that said IF you have much snow and ice in the winters you want the ARB 'cause that open diff in 4wd front and rear will help you stay in a straight line 'cause only one wheel is spining at each axle. Even a posi can get pretty squirly on slick snow or ice. I'm sure a lot of people will disagree and say "the more traction the beter" but I have first hand driven a 2wd open diff truck on ice better than the cherokee in front of me that had a rear posi, he was all over the road. You may want to check on the OX locker too. I like the simplicity of a cable accutuated locker. Mechanical is almost always better than electric or air in the enviornment we put our trucks through.

coming from Quebec and having to drive through over a foot of snow to get to work sometimes, I know exactly what you mean and that is exactly why I want to be able to unlock it when I don't need it.

I am a car enthusiast but quite a newb. to the world of off-road mods. Do you have any model to recomend? mechanical locking seems like the way to go. I was also considering a LSD for the front.

Since you have a '91 Rodeo, you have the GM 10-bolt rear end, unless somehow the Canadian ones are different than in the US.

The OX locker is only available for AMC 20, Dana 30, 35, 44 and 60.

Swapping in a D44 from a later Rodeo would probably be a viable option. Never looked into it, but surely it would be pretty much a direct bolt-in. Might be worth some research... open up your aftermarket options for sure. Just get one with matching gear ratios to your current axle.

Matt Goldsohn made that swap in order to go from 4.30 gears to 4.56 (which also means swapping the front R&P). You do gain disk brakes all around by doing the swap. I don't remember the details, but some changes are necessary for the emergency brake cable.

if you have the gm 10bolt then you would probably be better off if you just throw in an ARB cause for about $1000 (parts and installation) you will pay less than buying a d44+new gears+cable locker+ install your looking at around $1000-$1500.
