I prefer a gasket becuase they are re-usable (if you are gentle) and don't require lots of prying. But it really is up to you. Do you have the money for a gasket? Do you care if you pry?

Be careful with the GOO. I saw a gear set destroyed by a large ball of goo in a pumpkin. I used to work at a dodge dealership and one of my techs showed me a gob o goo that was keeping the oil for cooling the gears somehow. I don't know exactly how this happened, but i saw the results.

I've seen that too. the goo gets caught up in the pinion oiling passage and the diff overheats.

All great information. Thak you all for your input.

I use the 80 weight oil in there too.
I like the gasket with goo. Doesn't require nearly as much goo and makes pulling it off a lot easier. And at less than I spend on an oil filter, I can get one for each dif! Too easy.

Sunder,
I will be taking my 91 YJ to the beach for about a week for driving on the sand, some dunes and lots of fishing! I cary an air compressor with me so putting air back isn't an issue, but for 31x10.50's on stock rims, how low can I go on the air pressure? I run at 30/32 r/f on the road, 35/35 on the open highway and used to drop down to 15/20 for the sand with 235's... any suggestions?

It really depends on what you are doing. Whenever I go to race or pull someone out, I run 5 PSI. For general cruising I run about 12 PSI. If I know I am going to be hitting a lot of bowls, I run 15. At 15 PSI I can crank the steering wheel to the lock at 45 and I have only rolled a bead once at 15 PSI. YJ's don't like air or whoops. So unless you hit the whoops at 45+ you better be crawling through them. With my RC 4" lift and rancho's set all the way firm, I get about 3-4 feet of air with no landing ramp before I start bottoming too hard. 1-2 feet won't hurt it, but check your u-joints before you head home if you get it off the ground. The most important part, don't let the axle hop if you are spinning the tires. If you drive in 2wd and the hole jeep starts to shudder, let off and engage 4wd. You let it hop to much and you'll blow the u-joints, or pull the slipyoke out the back of the t-case and exploder it.

So, I should go 12-15 for touring the beach. Soft to semi-packed sand most of the time. Rare is there anything packed enough to keep out of 4x4 except for the ramps that approach the dunes from the roads, they are graveled to the dunes, then very soft all the way to the beak lines, then semi-packed. There aren't many places where I would get air on these beaches, and there are some well thoughtout "rules" for ORV use that don't permit "speeding", so I would most likely only be doing upwards to "perhaps" 30 at a long stretch that is semi-packed and few obsticles.

I have driven on these beaches for years, but never really considered doing it with the size tires that I am running on the stock rims. That's why the question regarding "how low do I go". I only want to keep some air in the tires without the tires coming off the rims.

Thank you for your input.

take a rachet strap with you, they don't take much space. you can rebead your tire with one, and it's far safer than ether! it'll give you confidence to "play for fun".
