I'm not hijacking just filling him in on the show. The mythbusters did a couple runs(quite a few actually) around an oval track in an SUV to determine which was more efficient-riding with windows down at high speed or having the AC on. Turns out having the all the windows down led to better MPG then habing the AC run.

That is another benefit to synthetic. It is added insurance to protect from sludge. Some engines have turned out to be prone to sludge, Some Toyota's, Saabs, etc. Toyotas problem caused them to change their recommended oil change interval from 7500 mi to 5000 mi.

OK; I definately, no doubt about it, positively get better gas milage on the hyway with the windws closed and air on. Stop and go driving is just the opposite. As far as oil change intervals, suppose your driving was limited to all short trips. What can burn off? And then how many months, years or decades would it take to reach that 13000 miles? There are just too many variables.

Thanks for the mythbusters link. It sounds like the test was not totally conclusive. There was questions about how fast they were going as well as the accuracy of the fuel measurement. Too bad, I wonder if which is more fuel efficient. The rolled down windows or the AC.

This is an easy test if you have have an onboard mpg gauge  I will test it on my passat. Kevin
