I don't think I would want to do the swap on a trail unless I really needed to. If I had the option of just going home (or back to camp) in 2WD, I'd probably choose that. But in a pinch, it's doable. You'd probably have to have some tools, though -- including a jack stand or two, a crowbar, and a sledgehammer, a torque wrench, 35mm socket, etc. -- and preferably a level spot on hard ground.
