From Steve Schaefer:

Knock them off carefully with a hammer. I thought Jeff would break out his Factory Service Manual. It goes into that in there. Yeah all the re-manufactured ones don't include the seals. If a seal is on a re-man junk it. It went through the acid of death cleaning process.

Make sure you get the outer as well as the inner off the old axle. My joints never leaked but I think that seal is for alot more than dust. I think it seals the gear oil as well. Once the seal is back in it should stop leaking. I think you can still drive it, just not in 4WD. There will be alot of oil still in there below the axle hole line.

See why I never did a write up, it's easy but hard at the same time.

I had to do a CV Boot replacement right before I got deployed for the war, which was back in February. In my case I mistakenly put the dust cover on backwards. There was a considerable spot of oil on the ground the next morning. So that day I took the axle off again and installed the dust cover the correct way. After that there was a little bit of gear oil around the tulip housing, but nothing hit the ground. I wasn't really given the chance to engage the front diff. and see if anymore would seep out.

One diagram shows a "dust cover" and another diagram doesn't show any dust cover on the inner tripod. You'd think it would be called an "oil seal", not "dust cover", if that's what it's for. According to the diagram, I see there's an oil seal built into the ADD unit. It doesn't talk about the inner dust cover because it doesn't talk about replacing the entire axle - it talks about removing an axle, replacing a CV boot, and reinstalling the axle.

My axles had those "dust covers" already on them.

There are 2 seals you will have to re-use. 1 on the inner CV as you have found and one on the outer CV. Between the spindle and the axle. I figured you guys would see that the re-man axle did not have this stuff and transfer it over.

We will be re-installing this axle at my house tomorrow (Sat.) at 2pm. Let me know if anyone is interested in coming over to check it out and help and I will give you directions. Darren? John?
