Is there a way to get them w/o an OBD II reader ? Like when you cycle the ignition switch and count the check-engine-light flashes on some vehicles ?
Reason I ask is yesterday it suddenly started running rough. You could hear and feel it. I'm thinking a fouled plug or something. I'd like to be able to get an error code to be sure I'm on the right track.
The check engine light has not come on.
Also, is there a trick to replacing plugs on the 3.5L ? I pulled one (it looks OK). The coil comes off easy enough but getting the rubber spacer out was a pain, and I'm thinking getting it back and with a good connection on the plug, is going to be worse.
Any hints ?

Getting the coils off is the hard part, sometimes the rubber sticks to the plugs, especially if they haven't been changed in a long time. Putting the coils back on is easy, they should snap on to the plug with no problems.
The only hint you need is for the rear drivers side plug, the brake system prevents getting a socket and long extension in there. All you have to do is feed in 2 short extensions one at a time.
Plugs on a Trooper are about as easy as it gets otherwise, half-hour job.

Thanks. The one coil I pulled off so far was no problem, I was mainly concerned about reinstalling the rubber sleeve and getting it to mate properly to the spark plug contact.
Is there any way to get codes w/o a scanner?

Is there any way to get codes w/o a scanner? Sorry, not on OBD II vehicle...wish there was.

If your check engine light isn't on then there are no codes to pull. I don't believe there is any way to pull codes w/o a scanner. AutoZone will let you barrow there scanner or pull the codes for you for free.

Well I replaced all the plugs last night with no difficulties. One was bad, which would account for it running rough.
Started it up this morning and tons of white exhaust is pouring out.
Now what is going on ?

One possible explanation is a bad head gasket...check your coolant for level and/or bubbles, and your oil for coolant.

Yeah, I was hoping that wouldn't be the answer <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />
Of course it's probably out of warranty <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />
Thanks
