I have been searching around and have been trying to figure out the best way to put together a cat-back exhaust. On the 3.2 what is the best size to use from the cats back? 2.5? 2.25?
I would like to have a shop fab a new "Y"pipe because I have heard that the stock one is fairly constrictive. Any ideas on this or just a waste of cash? Also there are about a million and one different opinions on mufflers to use!! What I am looking for is a fairly quiet at idle; a decient tone on acceleration; able to hear my 2400 Watt stereo when cruising on the highway; BUT what I absolutely don't want is that "raspy horrible poping something has definitely got to be wrong with that guys engine <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />" exhaust. So what does that leave me with if anything? Flowmaster? 40? 50?, Magnaflow? Dynomax Super Turbo?
Thanks for your input

I can't speak for the cat-back but the Flowmaster 50 series seems to be a great match with the 3.2. It's not overly loud at highway speeds, but it can be loud enough when you want it to be on hard acceleration. Idle sounds good. Matt carries it at Indy 4X Pete

able to hear my 2400 Watt stereo when cruising on the highway Are you serious about this or were you just wanting to "casually mention" that you have a 2400 watt system? My old system was only around 1100 watts and cleared 140+db maxed. With 2400 watts you should be able to hear it just fine with no muffler and all of the windows rolled down on the highway. If not, go have a chat with whoever designed and implemented your install... because they screwed something up <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

HA Ha that is awsome strawmyers. He is right though if you are worried about hearing the exhaust then you have issues with that radio. that is to funny. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
I am working on building a, what i belive to be a cat back system, out of 304 stainless. I have all the bends for it just need to get a few feet of straight pipe. I am going with 2.25. Just my choice I know some want to go to the 2.5. Best bet if you have someone build one is that you make sure all of your bends are mandrel and not pressed. The smoother the turns the better. also have them avoid any hard turn, that only builds heat and in turn loses performance.

Just trying to get my point across <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> Did it work? lol! I do have two of Sony's 1200 Watt competion 12" subs powered by two P5 800 Watt amps but who's getting down to the nitty gritty? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> It will definitely shake everything on the Zu and give you a really bad hair day though!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Well on my 99 Trooper I installed a Dynomax Super Turbo #17748 with 2.5" pipe. http://www.dynomax.com/documents/super_turbo_specs.pdfI liked the sound very much. Quiet at cruise, but nice deep sound on accel. Not blatty or farty at all. The 3.2 and 3.5 are very similar, so I'm sure it would work for you also.

Very cool i have a 2.5" in/out super turbo sittin in the garage (Not sure on the model #)!! I'm not very familiar with the 99 Trooper but on my Rodeo I have two cats then a "Y" pipe to my muffler... Does your trooper have the same?? If so did you have a shop build you a less restricitve "Y"? Thanks for your input <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />
Any chance of a picture? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

If it is an oval body Super Turbo I would make sure and get the 20" body, the 14" body was too loud.
I didn't get a new Y-pipe, I wanted to do the cats back (yes the Trooper has 2 cats) but then you get into making mounts for the 2 oxygen sensors behind the cats and stuff, and it was too expensive for my blood to do all that. So I wussed out and went from a flange just downstream of the Y. I do think it would be better to open up the Y-pipe though, if you can swing it.
Sorry no pics, the Trooper was totalled in an accident last year.

I absolutely don't want is that "raspy horrible poping something has definitely got to be wrong with that guys engine " exhaust It has been my experience that flowmasters do provide just what you discribed above!Or at least with V8s ive not had one on a V6.The flowsmasters IMO sound great untill they break in which doesnt take long then they have the farm truck sound like your talking about.I bought a Borla Pro muffler for my 3.5L Trooper and am going with the 2.25 pipe as that is what my Axiom had on it with the same engine and sounded real good!I got my Borla muffler brand new off ebay from a guy selling them for $80 which is about half the regular price and it has a million mile warranty!
