Apples and oranges for rentals:
* This year and last I rented Grand Cherokees in Sacramento and drove to Utah. I used 'em pretty carefully, then cleaned them up before returning them (the foxtails SUCKED this year). I won't advocate breaking and bashing somebody else's rig and then sneaking it back in -- I figure I take the risks and am ready to stand behind it as necessary.
* I have rented a fully-built Jeep in Moab before, FWIW... and there, they count on more extreme use. I lived up to it.

As for insurance on my personal 4x4, coverage has been cheap these last few years. Regardless, I won't claim off-road damage; again, I take the risks, and ready to stand behind it. If somebody runs into me, I'd be willing to claim that in most cases, but if the damage arises from a lapse in *my* judgement (i.e. I misjudge a line and mash a door), the dollars need to come out of *my* wallet. Other folks handle this diffently, but this is how *I* sleep nights.
