Great pics, Rob... it already feels like a year since I've been there. You brought back some good memories!

It always amazes me how poorly the camera can capture the dimension of these things... stuff like Dan sideways on Double Whammy just doesn't appear all that difficult in two dimensions, but DANG, I have been puckered when I've been on it!

Speaking of DW, who made it up? Rob, I reckon your wheelbase and build should have helped you scoot right up, right?

The Helldorado pix were especially fun -- wish I coulda been there to see in person, but I had too much to juggle that day... Besides, I won't even drive that canyon until I figure out a way to fold down the windshield or come up with some A-pillar skid-plating... that undercut wall on the left and slick slop on the right just sucks you in -- as I noted from the bodywork on the trucks in camp. A few years back, I saw a fella in an Early Bronco run that clean, with a hard top(!) -- but he was a local, and ran that whole dang canyon top-to-bottom in about 30 minutes, with another vehicle. The 'Bronco Line' was to back out darn near into the overhang and drop the front right tire in the crack to the right of where the guy is standing in this pic:
[Linked Image]
...and use that to pivot/push the front end uphill and to the right. He didn't use the right wheel for motivation, really, it was more of an anchor to prevent the front from getting sucked down and to the left, where gravity wants to take it. Dunno if you could take that line with the front pumpkin on the passenger side!

Actually, of more interest (less guaranteed) to me was the entry rock -- what line did Fernando take on that? Looks like you started more to the right, Rob, and tried a few different lines...

Looking at the fuel costs slide was sobering, tho! Good thing you were heading east, towards cheaper gas... if you'd come out west, the expense might have been damn near the same, with half the miles.

How many more days until IX?

yea, thats a bad obstacle for pictures. I was noticing as i was going through them, that none of them do any justice for that tough little climb.

yea, I made it up the left line with not too difficuly. I had first attempted the far right line Dallas did, but it just wasn't happening.

Fernando took what Dallas referred to as the cheater line , but its a straight drop in off to the left of where i was at the lines you up perfectly for the manevor around the next rock. Dallas and I opted for the straight in approach which was a pretty nasty dug out boulder.

yea, as expensive as it was, it really wasn't that bad considering that was really the only expense for a weeks worth of vacation not to mention priceless memories.

Yeah, I see a lot of rigs drop in on the left, but to me, that first boulder is the first obstacle, and it is a bugger, for sure. The best line I see fo my Amigo is to run the right tire right up and off it, then try to claw forward and skid the rocker/frame over it while dangling a front right and left rear wheels in the air, with a front left virtually unweighted, and the right rear doing all the pushing. Ugh. I've seen CJ-7 and similar wheelbases pull it off, but that rock would be all over my front driveshaft if I dropped in the wrong place.

For me to get there , sure its a long drive , but it would cost a lot less than me driving anywehre in canada. Our gas prices are totaly outrageous now , and don't look like they are going to go back down at all.Of course its all taxes in the price Right now , for the cheap stuff , its just under a buck a litre , so it works out to something like 4.60 a gallon , and I hear people complaining about 2.00 a gallon? Thats like a dream to me , I haven't seen prices that low in 20 years.

So , for the cost of 2.00 a gallon , I think I would drive acorss the US to get to Moab instead of across canada and then down.Would save me hundreds in the long run , and pay for itself.I do definately want to get there one year.

Plus I had to make a little side trip after leaving Moab to make sure my 4th of July is as much of a blast as Moab was....

Or, rather a 4th of July!

I did a page search on "J" and my best guess is you mean "what's a CJ-7." If so, yes, a wrangler varient. Here they are reproducted to original paint/decals

It was a joke Wayne. In reply to rockcrawler and ridgeblazer's posts above. Jeeps are nothing to be ashamed off or scared of. Dunno why it's so hard for people to say "Jeep".
