My 88 had that same spot go as well.. t was from the east coast.
If you can swing a deal on a CA or Arizona vehicle for the body and frame , do it!
I cannot believe how rust free blackie is. Red car was good but was from the deep south where i hear it actually rains!
And yes I have fixed my share of rust holes. I used a file folder holed for patch metal.

I cannot believe how rust free blackie is. Red car was good but was from the deep south where i hear it actually rains! Mine way sold new on the MS gulf coast (Pascagoula) and stayed there until I got it and moved it to AL. It has NO RUST. Now if they live on the islands, oh yea, they will look like a rust belt vehicle. I have an 88 swb in the back yard that will eventually go to scrap with an unwrecked frame. It only has slight surface rust. So far, Sparkem has dibbs on the RF fender. I would like to keep the LSD rear. Hood is trash but the rest of the panels are in pretty good shape.

Deep south cars are not bad to rust, in general. Mine has none. Bought in Greenville, S.C. and lived between there and Augusta, Ga. ever since (with forays here and there ).
87 Montero, bought new, by me - 88/89 intercooled Starion Turbo engine- with awesome audio.

From what I have seen they all have a little bit of surface rust here and there, my CA car just has a bit less than my Southern car. This is a semi arid area with a very short rainy season. Nine months of the year its dry.
Now the rust I am talking about is tiny flecks on the bottom of the vehicle, any spots where the paint scraped or chipped away. None of them are in danger of going through, the difference I saw was how bit the areas around a scrape got.
No rain = smaller rust spots. Once a vehicle has 200,000 miles and 18 years on it you can see small differences. This is nothing compared to the guys in the road salt areas.

This is nothing compared to the guys in the road salt areas I've replaced the entire rear half of my frame due to rust. Gave me a good excuse to do a SOA though .
