Just wondering how many miles you guys have done on these motors.

Mine is a 2001 and it has 70,000 but that's nothing.
Talked to two guys who are oil well tenders here in the WV mountains and drive off road all day long from daylight to dark in all kinds of weather. They both have 1989 Tacomas with 4 bangers. One has 381,000 and the other has 412,000 . The engines have never been rebuilt and they don't even smoke. There boss is buying both of them brand new 2005 Tacomas with all the decked out goodies. I thnk they deserve new Toy's, <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />. Mike

The 3RZ is a good motor. A good replacement for the venerable 22R/22RE series motors. They use a timing chain instead of a belt and the cams are gear driven. There's no reason not expect nearly as much longevity as the prior motor. When looking at used Tacomas I've seen mileages anywhere from 150,000 to over 250,000 miles on the original motors. I'm sure some go even longer.

I have a 3RZ in my 1998 4Runner. The original HG blew at about 185k miles. This seemed too soon to me, but I seem to have very bad headgasket karma. Otherwise, it's a very stout and reliable motor.

I have 160k on my 98 tacoma. No problems yet, i would take it anywhere and not be afraid of breaking down.

160K on my 97. Quite solid. Interesting about the HG. Any head or block damage when it happened? I know the iron/alum motors are quite sensitive to coolant maintenance, not to mention overheating...

Either they were Tacomas, or they were 1989. Not both. Agreed, the 89 minitrucks with the 22RE are quite solid. The 95.5+ 3RZ may well be as reliable.

Thanks for the feeback, these motors are the workhorses here is South Africa,(and the 1KZTE Turbo diesel) mine has only got 56000km about 35000miles. A friend of mine has supercharged (+- 170Kw)his and has done 100 000miles with it like this and not a single problem.

It would be interesting to know where your motor was assembled. I think our Tacoma motors are actually assembled here in the U.S. using some U.S. sourced parts. However, a lot of the overseas 3RZ were probably assembed elsewhere, like maybe Japan.

To be honest, I would feel better about a Japanese assembled motor. What's interesting about the 3RZ is that as far I can tell only you guys in South Africa and the guys in Australia got them, besides North America. Although they quit putting them in the Australia Toyotas a few years ago for some reason.

Still, I have no doubt it's a good motor. I would love to transplant one in my truck to replace my 22RE.

This would be a PITA, Brian. The 3RZ is a very tall motor, and actually sits at a slight angle in the Tacoma chassis. It also has a very deep sump. I have one sitting on a stand in my garage at the moment, and it's 3"-4" taller than a 22RE. I think fitting this in a pre-Tacoma chassis would be a lot of work, and would definitely require a 3" body lift (never mind the intake and exhaust being reversed).
