That was the first repair I did to my 89 4runner. Follow that maintanence link from OOP'S above- tells you exactly what to do. I did the Conan Overhead Slam technique to remove the backing plate- Quick and easy! BUT if I had to do it again and had more money than time I would take the assembly to a shop with a press to get bearings and retainer back in place. That was a PIA. That said it can be done quickly and that write-up is great- just follow the steps (and don't try to use black iron sewer pipe to hammer your bearings back in- it'll make a mess <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />)
