Replacing rear axle shaft seal? #607100 05/26/05 01:22 AM

Has anyone had any experience replacing the seals in the rear axle tube hub end. The FSM says to use a SST to remove the axle from the backing plate, is there another way without buying this SST? Is there anything else I should replace while I'm in here?

Thanks

Click on the Yota section link above and head to the tech and maintenance articles. High tech SST is there. Repack your bearings.

You can get a seal remover from parts houses, works
much better than screw drivers. Its like a miniature
crow-bar with 2 'hooks' on the end

There are two seals on the rear axle assembly (really three if you count the big O-ring. Which one are you asking about. The one in the housing or the one on the axle?
If it is the one on the axle here is a write up about changing it and how to get to it.

Most people do not even know that there is a way to repack the "sealed" rear axle bearing!!!!!

We'll I was planning on replacing all the seals while I had it apart, and possibly the bearing if I could find out how to check it to see if its bad or not.

Thanks

I replaced my rear bearings at about 160K miles. It was not urgently required and gear oil was staying where it should, but the option of having one grenade on a long trip was unappealing, so I chose to do it on my timeline. Seals too of course. The tech section has all your answers.

When I removed the bearings, they did have some barely noticeable play compared to new, but were not close to failure from what I could determine. But my confidence level is that much higher now.

That was the first repair I did to my 89 4runner. Follow that maintanence link from OOP'S above- tells you exactly what to do. I did the Conan Overhead Slam technique to remove the backing plate- Quick and easy! BUT if I had to do it again and had more money than time I would take the assembly to a shop with a press to get bearings and retainer back in place. That was a PIA. That said it can be done quickly and that write-up is great- just follow the steps (and don't try to use black iron sewer pipe to hammer your bearings back in- it'll make a mess )

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used a press. Took all 12 tons, and got reeeeeeeeeal exciting when it finally let go with a
BANG

To put it all back together I made SSTs out of an old 4Runner axle I had around for a project that never happened. Cut it up, welded little supports as needed, mighty handy to have around.

Makes good legal tender in trade for pizza for local guys wanting to save some trouble too!

I have a 20 ton press, and the SST to do this right, it can be seen in one of the pictures in the write up. But Erik wanted to do it the "shadetree" way to show folks you do not need a press. I was just kidding about Erik and the hammer, I was using the long tube like a slide hammer.
