I don't know how fast the voltage regulator is in the mean green. It would be really cool if it re-used the PCM regulator already on the jeep. But if you are running a good 1 farad cap, you'd have to be draining a very heavy load before you worry.

Audio amplifiers need high voltage (the one i built for home need 75 volts DC), something a car does not have. Since reisiters only work for lowrering the voltage , and a transformer only work off of AC, you need to desing a special step up DC transformer. A cheep step up DC transformer uses 2 transistors to swith posative and negative to give a square wave AC volatge. Then the square wave is ran through a step up transofmer, then bridge-recvtified and ran through some caps to clean it up. So really, you could have a decent amount of AC on the power in side, and as long as it does not interfeer with the switching transistors, and have clean steped up voltage on the amp side.

For us normal folk, that is right. When we turn on a load that is too heavy for the alternator, the bat. will take it up for the needed amount of time. But if you were to watch the voltage it would drop down to battery voltage while the alternator could not keep up. Since we are talking about an amplifier that steps up at a fixed ratio, the voltage difference is multiplied by that ratio. For example. Lets say you had a 300 watt RMS amplifier that needs a constant 130 (about 10 times more than charging voltage) volts in order to pump out a sustained 300 watts. If your alternator can't handle that load and drops 2 volts to bat. voltage, you didn't lose 2 volts at the amp, you lost 20. The high voltage is the difference between clipping and a nice clean note.

That is why you see those chromed shiny capacitors hooked in line with a powerful amplifier. A capacitor is like a battery but it has a variable voltage and discharges much quicker. you can charge a capacitor to 15 volts, drain it then charge it to 9. With a good capacitor you can get thousands of amps out of one in a second, something you canÆt do with a battery.

The only bad thing about a capacitor is that if you look at how big a farad actually is you will see that it is equal to about 1/1000 of the size of a battery. they do discharge quickly, but the amount of charge that they hold is VERy small.
i have seen 25 farad caps and i think i might have to get one of those when i can afford it.

so far i have heard yes there are plenty of High output alternators for our application! but only found one brand, mean green, and then later found that it might not be the best quality (let me stress the word MIGHT).

what other brands are out there that woudl pump out over 140amps?

ive got a few friends with decent systems running off the "stock" alternator (unchanged since they bought it) in their jeeps with no problems. BUT i have had two alternators go out on two different cars because of my systems and not having a good enough alternator to begin with.. so im just trying to play it safe.

hey guy....i didn't read all the advice, so my apologies if i repeat others words. i DO have first hand experience with this sort of set up. here is what you need:
1. run 4 or 5 gauge from the battery to the amps, put in an 80 amp fuse or circuit breaker in line close to the battery.a hint....go to a welder supply house and get the stuff much cheaper, less than half price, but no pretty colors.
2. divide the power with a power divider block just before the amps. use 8 gauge, or whatever it is that the normal power wire is, i forget the gauge.
3. use an optima battery, red top.
4. if you find that you are draining the battery (i doubt it), buy a capacitor for the bass amp, that's the one that sucks your battery dry!!!
i am running a rockford fosgate 200 IX on my sub + a JL Audio 300 watt amp on my 4 corners, no problems, and i'm not even using a capacitor. i never have problems. this system was in my cj7, with stock alternator, and now it's in my 1965 Rambler Classic with a 55 amp alternator.

I actually purchased the Mean Green because of it's high output at low RPM's as well as their reputation. If I am going to be running KCs and have my stereo blasting while the bass thumps my rearview mirror off as I crawl over a rock, I still want to be able to start my rig when I stop for a soda break.
I'm not saying that Mean grean isn't a reputable company with a great product....or doesn't care for it's customers, all I'm saying is that mine went out after a few months and I sent it back in March....and tomorrow is June.
......That's all I'm saying.

my concern is that when i have the stereo, lights, and heater on my amp gauge likes to take a dive to about 12.5 volts... (im guessing.. cannot get an accurate figure since hte gauge just has lines, no numbers). but if it cannot take that kind of amp draw without suffering.. then it wont be able to handle my plans for the jeep.

i also have been rethinking it and thining of going with less stereo. now im just at running the speakers off the HU, and then running one mono block (650wrms) amp to one sub.. not two subs and 3 amps like i originally planned.
