Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hi guys. You saved my butt once before with a cold shifting problem and I'm hoping someone can get me started in the right direction. I have a '91 6 cylinder that will not turn over today. Running fine yesterday. Engine cranks and has power. Sprayed out carb. Seemed like it tried to start. Read some archives and cleaned out inhibitor switch. No go. Any further advice?

Hi,

Give me a few more details.

1. Does the starter engage but the engine never fires?

2. If not, do you hear a click when you turn the ignition over?

3. When you say you sprayed the carb. do you mean you took off the intake hose and cleaned out the throttle body? If so, what did you use to clean it out and did you do this before or after it wouldn't start?

It's raining cats and dogs here. Is it raining heavily where you are? This could be related.

If the starter turns the engine over then you can rule out the ignition switch or the inhibitor switch.

We know the engine isn't seized up since it spins.

Then next thing to do is check for spark timing and fuel. These engines will run even when half dead. Unless your not getting any spark or any fuel I am surprised it isn't at least firing up then sputtering and dieing.

I would check for spark, check under the timing belt access covers to make sure the belt was still there, and would also be checking for fuel.

Took off intake hose and sprayed carburator with carb cleaner. Made no difference. Engine sounds like it is going to turn over, but doesn't. Will do the checks for timing belt and spark. Good weather here, not raining. Suspecting a fuel related issue. (Yes, it has gas!) I'm slow, but not that slow. Ha..ha.. Back under the hood I go...

HMM Im not sure what the carb cleaner into the TB is going to do to it.I had this problem on my V6 it was a timing belt.Take the cover off as your looking at the engine take the right side off and check for slack. That will rule out the belt. Then you can start lookin at you ignition system.

Nothing that would cause a no start. Unless he left a rag stuck in the throttle body. The real danger is the carb cleaner damages the internal gaskets and eventually coolant from the preheat in the tb leaks into the intake.

Didn't know carb cleaner was so bad. Won't use it anymore. Had the problem before I sprayed it, so no rag to blame. I did wonder if chipmunks or squirrels were causing mischief though. The little buggers love leaving acorns under the hood. Didn't have a chance to check the timing belt and will be out of town for a few days. I'm sure I'll be writing again soon though. Thanks.

Just how much carb cleaner did you spray??? You do know that this stuff isn't like gas or starting fluid, and doesn't burn the same, right? If you sprayed a lot of cleaner, it could just be fouling the gas enough that it won't fire. And until all the cleaner is gone, it may not fire.

Two MRI's and a CAT scan....it's confirmed. I'm just not right in the head.

I think its either the fuel pump/relay....or the timing belt is broken. You can't tell- it could be completely torn in two and you wouldn't know unless you take that cover off.

Back again. Thanks for the advice so far. Here's where I am so far... Timing belt seems fine. Checked for fuel pump noise at tank and heard it when key turned. No sparks when checked. Noticed a small noise coming from engine immediately after removing key from ignition after trying to start. I never noticed this noise before and it happens after I turn key, stop, then remove key. Is this a normal sound that I never paid attention to? Another question I had was whether Montero's would have an engine cutoff safety switch that some cars have?
