The sputtering is likely the cleaner breaking stuff loose.
I would change the oil after you're finished with the tank of gas you're on.

This cleaner will wash all kinds of goop down and dilute the oil.

I'm not a "snake oil" expert, but many believe that the $20 a can BG 44K is the best "snake oil" available.

I bought a can the other day for a 17 yr. old Accord. Will soon find out.
