Will an '85 & up oil pan work on my '84?? #609819 06/02/05 06:39 AM

Getting the Wheeling Fever
As stated, just want to know if an 85 and up will work with my 84 22R. I know there are differences between the 4wd and 2wd pans (I'll need a 4wd obviously).

The reason I'm asking is because my current one is fubared. Even after checking the pan for warpage and flattening out the areas around the bolt holes, it still leaks and I've gone thru 2 gaskets already. I am absolutely fed up with those stupid cork gaskets . I even took special care to not overtorque the bolts and extrude the gasket.

If I can't find a pan, has anyone successfully been able to just use FIPG or Permatex 'Right-Stuff' on an 84 and prior style pan rather than the gasket? If so , maybe I'll opt for that route.

You might be able to get away with using the FIPG. I'd give it a whirl before I started chasing down tin. At least on the solid axle trucks, you don't have the IFS hassle of jacking up the engine.

Oil pans are fine as long as they're 4wd 22Rxx schtuff. Just remember with the FIPG to get around the INBOARD side of the bolt holes, and don't use a goober bead, or you'll gum things up.

I had a similar problem with the crappy fel-pro cork gaskets, switched to the toyota FIPG. Its been about 8k miles and no leaks so far...

Thanks for the replies guys.

Toybluggie- I assume you're using the FIPG with the '84 pan then? I was just wondering if it would work OK still seeing as the 85 & up pans have the nice 'grooves' all the way around the pan for the sealant to sit in.

Ive never really looked at 85 & up oil pans, mine has a raised portion all along the middle of the rim. Grooves? Im curious, do you have any pics? Someone told me there were rubber oilpan gaskets, so while I was at the dealer asking for one they sold me FIPG. Works so far on an 84 oil pan.
