Body Damage is Cool
Impressive! I'm going on 6 weeks just doing my rebuild. I was waiting for a headgasket from Cometic for quite a while, I bought the last OEM crank bolts in the country and Spec (the clutch manufacturer) sent me a damaged clutch disc, then sent me a throw out bearing rather than a replacement disc. If it weren't for relying on others, I would be done!

Well the only thing that I've got done tonight is I made the connector tube for the exhaust manifold because I've got to watch my daughter tonight while the wife is out. The factory exhaust does the two tube into one about 2 feet after the manifold so I had to shorten that up for my crossover tube. I'm also going to run 2 1/4" exhaust on this motor. hopefully I can have it down to the exhaust shop by this weekend......I've gotten a quote of $200-$225 for the tube work and the muffler, I'm supplying the CAT.

Well tonight I tried finishing up some of the minor stuff to make sure I could actually drive it down to the exhuast shop Friday morning....you know, coolant, oil, power steering, clutch, etc... Well I'm all set to get it down there but I still got a lot of the little stuff to go. Mostly because I'm going to rewire all my accessories with this dual battery install.

I did chain the motor mounts down. and I put a little twist to it. I put a couple chains at an angle trying to prevent the motor from moving backward. This should help stop the EGR from hitting the firewall or the plenum from hitting my brake booster.

[Linked Image]

I then did some HOT LAPS around the neighborhood with no hood or doors.... I did get it up to 55mph already which IS legal on that road... Man is this thing loud with no exhaust! Hard to get a performance compraision now, but after the exhaust is installed I can run the tests again. so far I'm really happy with it.

Now as for quirks, It has some that I need to work on. The EFI relay appears to have power and ground to it all the time. so I'm affraid to leave the battery connected otherwise it could drain the battery. Plus the relay is getting warm to the touch. Just something I'm going to have to figure out.

The engine doesn't want to idle very well at start up. you have to give it some gas for say the first 5 seconds before it takes the idle. again I haven't tuned anything yet since I'm waiting for the exhuast.

I did find a loose banjo fuel fitting which was leaking gas. That could of been bad - Really bad! I just forgot to tighten it when I was putting the engine back together. but luckily that was an easy fix and nothing bad happened!

Here is what it looks like now! Hood, Grill, Doors are all back on! and just to let you guys know, I didn't have to modify the hood any for that radiator.

Heres how the exhaust turned out. Ended up being $300 for everything from the collector back and I provided the Cat and the collector. Its all in 2 1/4" exhaust and a 'turbo' muffer was use to keep everythign nice and quiet - I'm just sick and tired of my previous loud exhaust systems.

I choose to run the exhaust under the bellhousing instead of under the oil pan because I still wanted access to the bell housing bolts and the oil pan bolts.

[Linked Image]

The installed did a really nice job at bracing every point on the exhaust system. I was pretty clear on how I wanted it done and he exeeded my expectation. Also even doing it this was there is no way the driveline can hit the exhust with dual cases even with my low lift.

[Linked Image]

And here is the crossover. nice and clean.

[Linked Image]

And he was able to tuck the cat up nice and high above teh 2" lifted Sky's crossmember.

[Linked Image]

And then down next to the the traction bar (it not quite as close as it looks) and dumping it out right behind the center of the axle. that last Jog in the exhaust is mostly for sound deadening and for getting the exhaust away from the springs.

[Linked Image]

As far as driving impression so far..... I REALLY like it! Feels torque off the line and this motor likes to REV! The power band just keeps going and going.... Its really nuts! And I still haven't gotten around to even checking the timing yet! The distrubitor is still in the same location I put it when I bolted everything back together.

I gotta say this the single most impressive write up I think I have ever seen on any forum of any kind.

Well I finally found my wiring gremlin! I was getting a 1.3A drain on battery only after I connected the battery and started the engine once.... plus the heater fan would then have power to it after I pulled the key out..... And the other thing that keyed me into a problem was my EFI relay was getting warm to the touch...

Basically when I wired the EFI main relay I just spliced into the main harness where I needed to cut the existing wire and then splice into it. I was getting a weird power feed back though the system that after turned the key for the first time and it would engage the heater relay and then it would send power to the wrong side of the efi relay. It was a PITA to find but I finally did!!!

The other thing I worked on was adjusting the 4cyl tack to read the correct RPM for the 6 cylinder motor. Well that fix was real easyusing this info:

http://www.mindspring.com/~jayk3/toyota/tachmod.htm

But I had one heck of a time trying to figure out what the actual RPM of the motor was! I couldn't figure out how to hook up my dwell/tach meter to the coil to get it to read RPM.... Everytime I hooked it up I was only reading 150-200 RPM. I even borrowed two other meters and they did the same thing. So I finally gave up on that and I was able to wire in the donor car tach from the cressida instrument cluster. but the odd thing about that is that was only showning 500 rpm at idle..... to me it sounded more like 700 ish.... so anyway I then hooked up my 4runner tack and set it accordingly. I would still like to figure out what I was doing wrong so I can compared the actual rpms to the tach as say 3000 rpm.

So I basically spent all yesterday working on those problems.... doesn't feel like I did anything productive!

And here is going to be my last entry on my actual costs. I don't expect to be buying anything else for this motor swap. I've also still have about $200-$300 of more stuff off the motor that can be sold. so that would put my total cost for this motor swap and dual batteries around $1700-$1800.
