Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hello everyone. Thanks for all the good reading.
I looked through the old posts but have not found much.
The new (old) Raider showed up a couple of days ago and the fuel gauge is not working.
I filled it up, it started working for a bit then slowly drifted back to "E". Shows no fuel all the time.
Do you think I need a sender unit in the tank?
Anyone got one laying around? LOL....
By the way it is an 89 SWB, 3.0, headlight washers, bouncy seat, LSD rear.
Love IT!
Thanks

Hate to say it. Never have time and money together. The raiders all of them are available.
Parts or whatever you want.

Mine did the same thing then stopped working alltogether.
It could be the sender but I suspect a bad ground from the sender to the car. If I put a resistor between the wire to the sender and the frame, I got a reading on the gage. I have not determined if the bad ground is between the sender and the mounting flange or the flange and the tank.

When I got my '90 Monty the fuel gauge only worked when the tank was full, then at about 3/4 of a tank the gauge dropped to empty. I pulled the sender (an easy job, because Mitsubishi put an access plate on the floor above the gas tank). I tested the sender with an ohm meter and it was bad--had rust in all the wrong places. Got a new sender from the local Dodge dealer (can't remember what I paid, seems like around $60-$70) and installed it. Because of the access plate this whole job is very easy. While you're in the area you might clean all the electrical contacts including the fuel pumps. In fact, like Bob said, cleaning the contacts might fix the problem, without you needing to replace the sender. Good luck, let us know what you find.

I sure am glad you mentioned the access port on the floor. My 1989 Raider has the same problem.

Two people who should know about these cars told me to drop the gas tank to replace the sender unit, so I was prepared to take that route.

Thanks!

I'm glad you mentioned it too. I had no idea. It would make it much easier to install an in tank fuel injection pump! Thanks!

I know the V6 fuel injected models have access plates, but I don't know if the carb models have them. Maybe you can check and verify it for all of us.

WOW guys, thanks for the info.
I will get on that this weekend.
The only other thing I know is wrong is it showed up without and EGR tube from the exhaust to the intake manifold.
Little tube was pricey from the dealer, but I don't have time to hunt one up. Have no idea what it would do running without it but we have inspections in TX so I want to try and get it to pass.
Thanks for all the info.

The tanks are the same (Gen I)but the V6 has the pump with the float level unit. There is a plate on the front side of the tank. The float unit (and pump) is attached to the plate.

You may find that the float is bad.
