Getting the Wheeling Fever
Well, all my tires need to be replaced, so I find myself in the market for tires. I would like some help selecting tires.

My criteria is:
1. Dont want to regear
2. Don't want to lift
3. Truck used as daily driver
4. Light offroad consits of sand, dirt, light mud
5. Milage is important to me
6. Fairly heavy duty desired (many ply sidewall)
7. Road noise is bad
8. tread life is not super important
9. want to keep stock wheels
10. Price is an issue, though not an overriding issue (no problem paying for quality)

I currently run 225/75/15 and am considering either

235/75/15 or
255/70/15

Some snow may be required, though if I move back to Alaska dedicated snow tires will be in order.

I do a lot of LOOOONG road trips so keep that in mind please

I have been thinking of the BFG at ko's as they seem to to well at just about everything, though I have read some complaints about sidewalls

Please chip in and give me some ideas.

Again the point is performance, not looks, and the performance is not high offroad performance, but decent on and offroad performance. If I decide to get serious mudding or rock crawling I will buy tires accordingly.

If you do wheeling AND alot of road driving, then definitely stick with all terrain, no matter who makes it. I went with Pro Comp, got a great deal on eBay, and coudn't be happer. Just check out my pic...

I've had great luck with BFG long trails and ATs, but if you want something strong, I'd look for one of the commercial marketed tires.

Dunlop's Radial Rover R/T looks to have an aggressive tread and will last well. Plus Dunlops are pretty cheap.

I would say to go 235/75, almost no power difference, easy to find, and cheap.

I don't know where the idea started that BFG's had weak sidewall, maybe back in the 70's, from my experience the sidewalls have been very strong. The last set of AT's I had, I had slashes in the sidewall 1/4" deep and chunks of sidewall missing that were nickle size and 1/4" deep, and the tires still held air after 7 yrs and 65k miles.


More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else.

The BFG ats do seem like they have a thin sidewall, to the touch. I had a set on my old jeep and I put them through hell. I never had a leak, albiet the sides were scary slashed up. I run a 31.10.50 set on my turbo truck, they wear well and do some lt. wheelin'. 17000 miles all is well. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

I was going to go w/ BFG AT's on my daily driver but they didn't come in 225/75/15's. Ended up going w/ BFG Land Terrains. The tread pattern is very similar to the AT's and are fairly inexpensive too. I paid $67 a piece at Walmart. Got close to a thousand miles so far and very pleased w/ 'em.

Your criteria for a tire sound identical to my own.

I narrowed my search down to 4 great tires.

1. BFG All-Terain TA
2. BFG Long Trail TA
3. Bridgestone Dueler AT
4. Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo

I went with the Dueler AT Revo for the following reasons.

BFG All-Terain TA: Great tire but noisy (relatively speaking) and if not rotated religiously will wear goofy.

Long Trail TA: Great tire but give up a little too much off-road.

Dueler AT: Great tire but the Revo was quieter

I think that the Revo's give up a little off road (not much IMHO) vs. the BFG AT. They wear very well and are very quiet for an AT tire. They are also very smooth and will handle as much load as your Toyota will haul.

My dad bought some BFG AT's at the same time I bought my Revo's. The Revo's have held up better and are significantly quieter. They will also do everything that the BFG's have done off road.


2000 Ext Cab SR5 4WD 2.7L 5-speed.

Pirelli Scorpion A/T should foot the bill, as well.


My '86 4Runner went to the bone-yard November 29, 2004 at 10am after roughly 430,000 miles on the original engine and transmission. :-( Looking for something else to wheel in...
