'94, 2.4L 4X4 of course



About a week ago I notice that when I turn on the AC, it would smell a little then get cool. OK,no problem. As the days progressed, it was not cooling as well.

Today, I go by the local AC guy for a recharge. 2 cans later, he looking concerned. He shows me the manifold sight gauge. When he shakes the can, the sight glass has liquid and that its not getting sucked into the system. He tells me the expansion valve and dryer need to be replaced. I'm informed that it will take 3 hrs. to yank out evaporator box and replace everything.

I looked at the 93 FSM on this site(thanks) and it seem that a reasonably inclined person could replace these parts themselves.

I have to say that working in tight confines under the dash is frustrating at best. Countless things could go wrong.



Somebody please tell me this will be a piece of cake. That a trained monkey could do this. Any things to look out for?

You can do it yourself. I did all my Corvette's A/C work and then took it to a local no-name garage to have put in a vacuum for 2 hrs and charged up. that was the best/cheapest way to fix my a/c. So If i were you, i'd call around for prices on A/C parts. Seems they fluxuate a lot from place to place. Here in FL some A/C places are WAY over priced. $900 to replace/charge my 84 supra's evap core. RIP OFF. cost me $225 when I did it and had it charged.

the evap box is not real hard to remove. just disconnect the lines, take the glove box out and unbolt. should slide right out. the exansion valve is inside. Important note: always use 2 wrenches on line and be gentle, fittings may be corroded. work them back and forth to loosen corrosion.
the reciever/dryer is real easy, remove grille and bingo there it is. be sure to replace any O-ring that you see(get from ac shop).
then take it to a shop to have it vac'd down to test for leaks and fill.

I installed my AC in my runner and it is really nice on those Hot/Humid days...........Karl

I found out that my truck is a " 'tween ". Its a late 94 thats has transitional parts. Early 94 parts wont fit and 95 parts are Tacoma. I had to go to the dealer for the parts. Prices(w/ discount) were competetive w/ parts store. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Since the summer months have rolled around I have noticed an increase in the posts referring to A/C issues. I recently had to get mine up and running so I would survive the humid TX summer. I recently replaced my dead compressor and found an excellent and very cheap place for A/C components, cost me $170 for my compressor (new w/warranty). I thought I would share it with all of you. www.blendair.net Their local in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area but they do ship anywhere in the U.S.
