Hah-- you should've seen some photos a guy sent me about a year ago; the crank had busted out from behind the oil pump; I sent that one to Ted for an awe factor. Don't think I've got it anymore; had to clean the drive up a bit.

Nuther red one, huh? Kewl. Yeah, Stan and I would have a couple cots over there!

You are gonna love the pictures of the crankcase then T! While the outside of the block was clean and tidy, the walls of the crankcase and the main caps were BLACK. Not as in shiny or broken black...but if one was to try and picture what the end of a firepoker looks like after some use...that kind of sooty BURNT IN A FIRE kind of black. The sludge that was in the sump area was a fine mixture of uck and rod bearing materials...Thinking only the shell itself was left to weld itself to the assembly.

Plans for this motor? Who knows.

Well, if current events werent what they were with us waiting around for test results....and work being busy..I woulda been down there by now. As it is, the block is on the stand, pan off and head will be coming off when I get home. The danged crank bolt is another fun one. I hit it with 150 psi through the 1/2" impact and got nothing honey. I hate it when this happens. Will probably bolt on a spare flywheel and the extra bellhousing...remount the starter with the engine assembly chained down to the work sled. Otherwise its off to the store for cutoff wheels! Went through 4 of them last saturday when I found out the ball on the truck was too big for the tow dolly. Sumabitzin nut was frozen solid...so I had to encourage it off. LOL

Soon my friend...soon. The rod and crank will more than likely be added to your scrap bucket....pretty cooked along the #1 rod journal.

PS- Keep in mind, I have that other laser block to fiddle with as well. Its currently at 40over on the pistons, .50 mains and .25 rods. Cylinders are good to go as are the crank journals. More than likely just require some new rings and bearings and be set. Would like to use that crank in the Celicas block though...its a virgin block.

Body Damage is Cool
so i'm not the only one here about to do another engine build

the '82 engine is acting really, really funny since i replaced the head gasket. has kind of a tapping sound at idle, and under load makes sort of a soft knock(almost sounds like a bad exhaust leak). can't figure it out, since i used a toyota gasket and had the head milled ever so slightly. one problem i've had with the engine is that with it in the bay, the front left ARP head stud is either crooked in the block or the hole in the head is screwed up. can't get it on unless i pull that stud, set the head down and slightly to the side(on top the dowel), screw the stud in and reef on the head to get it to seat.

looks like i might be building the mighty little 20R that's sitting on its side behind the garage

Well Kyle, this isnt for a daily driver, just a project to keep me busy and in the long run maybe make some money in the end. Similar to my previous 81' Celica project. Bought it for just over $100, put max of maybe $500 more into it including the title fees etc....sold it for $1300 cash. Could have got alot more with it being all original car in better than good condition but I got what I wanted from it. This engine now that I pulled from the 85' Celica is full of surprises. Its been apart recently...kid I bought it from only had the car 2 months before the engine seized. With the new alternator, starter and misc new parts on the car in the engine compartment...Im thinking owner he bought it from threw parts at a problem and ended up selling due to lack of success. Last night I pulled the head...guess what? The cylinder head is new, not stock...but an aftermarkey casting that has the markings looking alot like my protopline casting that was used for the Street RV from Engnbldr. Head gasket was the new "slipper" design and just for the record...its a good unit. Came off in one piece and didnt have all the stress damage most HG see from these engines. Down side of teardown, #2 rod bearings were virtually non existant. Almost looks like the set spun together...there was nobearing material left on the shells. Rod journal on the crankshaft for #1 is beyond repair and #2 is about as bad as I have seen. #3 and #4 were like satin once the assemblies were pulled. Cool thing is the block is sound and never been cut. Cylinders are flawless and still have a hint of the original factory honing pattern. So no overbore will be required. Funny thing I seen with the head off brought back memories from my first engine failure. I peered down the #1 cylinder and seen the crystal clear imprint of the combustion chamber stamped onto the piston face. LOL I took pictures of the damaged lower end and of the bearing remnants...but after downloading them I cant seem to find our photo editor program to resize and dial in. Wonder where it went? Cool pics too. Hopefully I'll be able to get them up on here later. As I said before...I have never seen lower end damage this severe that didnt involve a rod ejecting through the side of the block. 20R rebuild? I oughta come down there and beat you silly with a connecting rod...hell Ive got 2 late style engines to play with now. One does have to go back into the Celica though.

>>>*What you are seeing is actually getting to be common. With so many of these little engines now hitting 200 to 300K and up, we are finding the upper limits for bearing's ability to withstand load.

Used to be, when we saw a bearing fail it was kinda like tracking a Chicken through a snowbank, the reasons were obvious.

Now we are seeing bearings that just fail, everything around them looks just fine. So I am suspecting that we are simply seeing the end result of service life. Once a bearing begins to fail, it can go quickly and all by itself, the piston begins to rub, then strike the head as wear continues.

We all go look for something wrong in the timing setup....*LOL**...Hey! *Everbody knows that's all that ever goes wrong..been there and done that one myself.

*Only one thing to do....come up with an even better bearing..*In the works, by the way.....*EB

Darin

If you love basketcase engines you would have a field day with my truck. It is a 94 22RE i've had for about a year and half. The engine ticks and clicks and sounds very much like a diesel. Well I think I finally put it out of its misery yesterday going down the highway. Now besides the ticking and clicking and has a super knock. Sounds like it might have thrown a rod. Luckily i've been preparing for this inevitability and already started rebuilding a donor motor (picking up the reconditioned head tommorow).

I have friend who teaches toyota tech at a local school and when I started the engine for him last week he was almost speechless and could only comment that it "was a very sad engine" I've heard all of the following possibilities as a diagnosis: spun bearing, timing chain, no oil getting up top, and more and the way this engine sounds they could all be right.

I am perversely interested in opening this engine up to see what kind of disasters are enclosed within.
When i finally do i'll be sure to snap some pics and post them for all to see.

Okay, took some pictures, but the quality is worse than bad. Dang camera isnt very old either...maybe 18 months. Oh well, guess next time I wont be so cheap and spend more than $300. Whats it cost for a camera that good pictures for longer than 6 months? $1000?? No pro here....

Anyways- random pictures of the 85' 22RE I pulled last week. So far outlook isnt to positive since complete teardown revealed some seriously smoked parts. One being the block. But here they is...

Will take pictures of the #1 rod, cap and face of piston this afternoon using one of the cameras here at the office. At least here I can have my Aaron make them presentable.
