After seeing the poor physical condition my KN is in (gasket is tore up, dents on the metal screen) after 1.5yrs I don't feel like paying another $45 for one + those $10 kits. I did some sniffin on the net and found/realized the oil on the KN's can damage MAF's. Granted the 3.0 has a AFM which is a mechanical potentiometer not electral like the 3.4's MAF. So Which regular filter should I go with???
Napa gold? STP? purolator?

I have used all of those over the years and fram also. They all seem to keep the dirt out of my carb.

Curiously, being a K&N anti-fan, I am ending up with a K&N after the motor swap, with the 3.4 MAF. I shall oil lightly. And, run a foam pre-filter, always, till death do us part.

That's what I'm thinking of doing. What foam pre-filter are you using? Do you know if Amsoil has one the right size to fit over a K&N?

i had the worse luck with mine...

the salad bowl configuration on mine. well the bottom part started to sag.

but it's stiff rubber so now, the filter is taller than oem and it didnt make a tight seal anymore.

so off to pismo beach i go where the sand is VERY fine.

i tried to climb a few sand hills and hit stuff. that was enough to jar the air box to let sand in.... PAST THE FILTER!!!!!!


add to the fact, that over the years, i "kinda" over oil and now the oil plus sand has completely got the air flow sensor vane stuck in the wide open position, fooling the computer that lots of air is coming through, so it told the fuel pump to let more fuel.

which then gave me a very lean situation...

fortunately, i was able to find toyota dealership last saturday afternoon and they were able to help me out completely! (thumbs up to san luis obispo toyota!!!!!!!! -- this was a few years ago, but still...)

now i'm still using paper filter. keep a used one as backup.

i was able to return the "broken" filter back to k&n and they shipped me a replacement. anyone wanna buy one cheap?

Well I'm not going to launch a R&D program for ATV/Pre-foam filters. Not worth it. And the KN is gone as far as I'm concerned. I guess all the typical paper filters will do.. no real advantages over another then? Reason I'm asking is b/c a STP from Autozone is $8.99 and a Napa gold is $15. Basically 2x's the price. I've seen the flow characteristics of a napa gold,.. not a STP or fram. any reason I should get the $15 napa over the $8 STP? napa advertised it traps 50% more debre....not sure how accurate that is.

With a paper filter as long as the inside stays clean it is working perfectly well for me. They let in all the air your engine will ever need under *normal* non track driving conditions.

If you have two brands in the store perhaps compare them side to side and go with the one with more baffles=more paper=mo betta. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

I'll probly buy a Napa Gold, STP, and a Purolator and compare them. Would really suck to pay $15 for a filter when you can the same/better for $8.

There is. Fram tends to use a very cheap glue on their paper/frame joints. I've seen them sucked apart more than once.

As a rule of thumb, more pleats equals more filter media, which gives better air flow. But when they cram so much filter in there that the edges butt up against each other, the air flow is almost completely eliminated. Purolator does this sometimes as I recall.
