Do you know where the tach reads it's signal from on your stock 22re (on my 98 it reads it from the ECU, which has a tach wire)? They may utilize different signals since the 22re used a distributor and the 3.4 is DIS. That doesn't answer your question, but the new signal may not be compatible with your old tach.
