Thought I would post an update. Took the Chili on a local 3+/4 trail here, Spring Creek. I avoided the first obstacle, its one of the hardest and I didn't feel like almost rolling it possibly should something go wrong.
It was definitely over-cautious. The Chili wheeled better than it ever has, no issues whatsoever. I spent time going up I-70 in 5th, where I would have been in 3rd, and 4th, where I would have been thinking 2nd was not far off. To top it off, the gas gauge moves slower now too.
Another bonus, felt with the front locker engaged: higher power steering pressure. Very light and easy steering. Nice.
Just a couple issues remain, because I wanted to tackle them myself (cheaper). AC hoses: seems like I should be able to cut the four, mate them, and have two hybrids. Maybe splicing in a port on the low and on the high pressure lines. No? But from where do I get these parts?
There is a place local to me, Maxair, who will no doubt do a fantastic job of hoses, a new condenser (do I really need one for R134a???), and a charge, for keeping my truck a couple days and relieving me of $350.
I think I'd go with onboard air first. But on those hot days...
Secondly, there are lots of articles on making 3.0 tachs work, simple job really. If only I had one. Has ANYone made the 4 cylinder tach work with a resistor here and a mod there? Or is it a whole different animal, and do I have to locate an 88 or 89 3.0 tach somewhere (getting rare...)?

Re: Tach
Do you know where the tach reads it's signal from on your stock 22re (on my 98 it reads it from the ECU, which has a tach wire)? They may utilize different signals since the 22re used a distributor and the 3.4 is DIS. That doesn't answer your question, but the new signal may not be compatible with your old tach.

Yes, but both are equally true with the 22RE and the 3.0 tach. Yet the 3.0 works with a 10Kohm resistor. My question is, how does the 4 cylinder tach differ from the 3.0, and is it possible to make it work via similar hacks?

Hey Bill tach are different. I just did one last year I converter an 86 22RET truck over to a 3.4 and also the digital dash over to a SR5 dash that I believe was a 4cylinder and the 10kohm resistor mod worked. I will see if I took any picts and if I didn't I will try and get some for you.

Ah, hi stranger! Bearing welcome gifts too, I might add. COOL! Same location as the 3.0 mod then? Surely, not the same 10Kohm, no? If it really was a 4 cylinder cluster, it would not have the telltale '6' on the tach face below the bezel IIRC.

If it really was a 4 cylinder cluster, it would not have the telltale '6' on the tach face below the bezel IIRC. If the tach input signals are the same between a 4 and 6-cyl tack, you might be able to make it work. I used a 10K adjustable pot on a 4-cyl tach to work with the 4.3 per Jay K's instructions. But if you need a 10K for the 3.0 tach, will that be enough for the 4-cyl tack, or will you need more? Ugh. Soo many questions...

Knowing that you did the 10K mod on an I-4 tach for a chebbie V6 and it worked... and that maybe it worked with another 3.4... emboldens me to try maybe a 30K or even a 50K trim pot preset at 10K, mounted where I can get at it, and give it a go. That should cover things. Thanks, guys!
I suppose it's working as a pull-up resistor maybe? I can see from the schematic that the 22RE ignitor is acting as a grounding input in the stock setup, with the other side of the tach on the +12 rail. Wish I had a schematic of the tach itself, it would answer so many questions.

Thanks a lot, Bill. I thought I was already broke enough as it is, now I have to figure out how to swing this mod too.
