Getting the Wheeling Fever
This morning, I stopped at the gas station and when I fired my engine pulled away & it was sputtering and smoking bad. It is a rebuilt 6cyl, 2,000 miles. Has been running perfect until this morning. When I installed the rebuilt motor I added a DUI ignition, Weber carb, no emmsions stuff, etc. Doesn't seem to me to be fuel problem, maybe like it's misfireing? The smoke is white, definately not blue? Any ideas????

Thanks

Howdy Junkie.. Is is t 4.2 or a 4.0? Did it get straight and drive home or come back on the HOOK? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" /> Did it pop and crack and jump up and down.. Is it alright now?
Please give some more facts.

It'll sputer and pop. When I first get on it, it'll kick smoke out, fair amount too, and sputter and pop the whole way. I only had to drive about 1/4 mile to work. Haven't been able to walk out there and take a look yet. It is a 4.2, and I tuned just about perfect. Never has even stalled or missed once since I first fired her and timed it & ajusted the carb a bit. I took off aand it was kind of poping and I looked in the rearview and saw smoke. She never smokes. Just wanted to see if you had some ideas before I went and starting messing with it? Do you think fuel or ignition? Any of your own thoughts would be great.

THANKS!!

could it be a fuel filter? Does it do this even if running VERY slow and easy? Does it do it when the gas pedal is depressed FULLY? Does it start and idle GOOD and only do this when attempting to ADVANCE mph? C'mon help us out here..

Alright, here was it was no big deal. Distributor bolt came loose and was off a bit. Ajusted and seems smooth again. Ah, once in a while you get an easy fix. However, there does seem to be some white smoke from the exhaust. Do you think it is an adjustment on the carB? to Rich? What else could cause it. Seems to be a steady amount. Obviously the more you gas it, the more the smoke. Thanks Jim!

White smoke is not from something that is too rich. might be oil smoke. Keep an eye on the oil level and run it for a while to see if it gets worse or better. Also pulling the spark plugs and inspecting them might get you closer to the offending cylinder.

First fire it up it idles at about 50. When warmed up it drops to about 25. When driving it is usually around 40. What's ya think I should look at first? Options? Thanks again Jim!

You're not running a FRAM filter I hope. It runs well now except for the smoke?

Yea, when I realized the distibutor was loose and the timing was off, I just adjusted and tigtened the bolt back down and runs great. Nice throttle response, no hesitation, no sputtering, etc. However, I notice white smoke, although only a little coming from the exhaust. When I'm driving it's not as if I can see the smoke in my rearview or anything, but let's say at idle it just puffs from the exhaust pipe and if I have someone rev it you see some more. Any thoughts?
