but the funniest is when a truck doesnt make any noise at all....i went to start my 4runner up yesterday, it turned over a couple of times, i got a half assed fire that was ripe with incomplete combustion, and that was it. i cant get her to start again. kaput..done. checked the obviouses....any suggestions? think of the noise as when youre starting a vehicle and you dont let it turn over just quite long enough..you end up cutting it off right as its starting to fire....its like that noise.

Check for air leaks in the ducting between the air filter and throttle body. A small hole or crack in the rubber or plastic parts can cause a situation similar to that.

went out and checked...nothing. just cranks, and cranks, and cranks....

Might try the fuel pump test jumper:

Do like 4Crawler said, test the fuel pump with the jumper wire. You should hear the fuel going through the rail with the key in the on position. If you got fuel to the rail, next check to see if you are getting spark to the plugs. If no...trace back until you find power in the ignition circuit. IF you have fuel to the rail and spark to the plugs..pull the plugs and make sure they are wet with gas. If they are dry then your injectors arent opening and you get to dig into the wiring harness. See if it will fire on starting fluid...if it fires off then dies its the injector circuit.

EUREKA!!! ok..so the jumper worked...but is highly sensitive. if i touch it, the pump kicks off. the pump makes no noise with key on, jumper out, so my pump just must be screwy? throw a new pump at it? with the engine off, jumper in, key on, i hear a noise coming from the fuel rail area...i dont *see* any fuel leaks, so maybe i have an air leak? when i idle up to 1800, it drops down to 1500 right away. everytime. and ideas? could this be tied in?

The hissing sound you hear is the fuel pressure regulator doing it's job. Sounds just like a small air leak.

If the pump runs at all, then the pump is probably OK, they either work or they don't. Likely the wiring or the circuit opening relay is the source of the problem.
