Finally, just so they're not left out , there's the Gen III (2001 & up) which I don't know a lot about except that it's unibody design, a 3.8L engine, the locker option was dropped (in favor of an electronic LSD), and has a neat 'stow n go' 3rd row seat (although why they went from 2 smaller seats to one medium sized one I can only guess at...). Most here seem to poo-poo it's offroad worthiness but I think it's probably more capable than people give it credit for.
HTH!

I got, well my wife , a GEN III and all I can say is IT IS SWEET on the road it rides like a Mercedes. I took it once to a real bumpy road tosee how it felt compared to my GEN I and let me tell you, don't let the IFS/IRS fool you it performed great!!! Im my opinion it is very capable still with the IFS/IRS. As for the body style, what can I say? I love it!!!
One detail about this 3.5L is that still when it is rated at only 200HP and torque at 245 I have noticed that this engine keeps pulling real hard all the way up only to be interrupted by the rev limiter, I think that the torque and HP curve surpases the 6k RPM limiter. This is one of those engines, as the 3.0 and 3.5 from Nissan and the 1.8 and rotary -well that is a different beast- from Mazda, that can rev with no problems and are confortable even at high rpm.
Oh, before I forget. On GEN III the SOHC 3.5L was used until 2004 and they then started usingf the 3.8L which in Japan is a 4.0L.
