My '97 has the SOHC too - that's why I got it. My little bro has an '01 and the 5 speed auto has been a problem since he bought it, though it seems to have held up okay this last year. Nice interior too. Man, I wish my truck had bun warmers . . . .
Best of luck,
Jim

Ah yes, that's right - the minor drop in HP could then be attributed to the switch to SOHC.
As far as those eBay flares go, I was itching to snag them up but I wasn't absolutely sure how they'd look/fit on either of my Gen IIs. I thought I remembered DougH or somebody had a set a while back but got rid of them 'cause they were like 4" wider than even the stock flares. I also wasn't in the mood for a bidding war, so somebody likely got a nice deal...

Finally, just so they're not left out , there's the Gen III (2001 & up) which I don't know a lot about except that it's unibody design, a 3.8L engine, the locker option was dropped (in favor of an electronic LSD), and has a neat 'stow n go' 3rd row seat (although why they went from 2 smaller seats to one medium sized one I can only guess at...). Most here seem to poo-poo it's offroad worthiness but I think it's probably more capable than people give it credit for.
HTH!
Shawn
I got, well my wife , a GEN III and all I can say is IT IS SWEET on the road it rides like a Mercedes. I took it once to a real bumpy road tosee how it felt compared to my GEN I and let me tell you, don't let the IFS/IRS fool you it performed great!!! Im my opinion it is very capable still with the IFS/IRS. As for the body style, what can I say? I love it!!! One detail about this 3.5L is that still when it is rated at only 200HP and torque at 245 I have noticed that this engine keeps pulling real hard all the way up only to be interrupted by the rev limiter, I think that the torque and HP curve surpases the 6k RPM limiter. This is one of those engines, as the 3.0 and 3.5 from Nissan and the 1.8 and rotary -well that is a different beast- from Mazda, that can rev with no problems and are confortable even at high rpm. Oh, before I forget. On GEN III the SOHC 3.5L was used until 2004 and they then started usingf the 3.8L which in Japan is a 4.0L.

Ah yes, that's right - the minor drop in HP could then be attributed to the switch to SOHC. I think the drop in HP could also be due to the removal of the lower plenum butterfly valve.

Most popular engine for the Gen III here in South Africa is the 3.2 DiD turbo diesel.
I'm fitting such an engine and drive train into my Gen1 !

That's looking great and will make a terrific truck.
Diesels are a state of mind here. Either you like them or you don't. I do and patiently await the USA availability of the 3.2 CDI diesel in the ML with its 369 lb-ft of torque. That will make my 6th MB diesel. Much of the reason for not having many diesels here is the lower cost of gasoline we've enjoyed until recently. As in the 70s, diesel popularity will return if the present prices stick - even in cars, since I don't think hybrids are the answer - at least not at the present price of battery pack replacement.
If we had the engine you're using available here (don't think we do) more would likely attempt the swap. Keep us posted.
