Getting the Wheeling Fever
What exactly would be the visual signs of a bad timing belt? I was going to go ahead and change it while I was going to replace the other 3 belts, for goodness sakes I don't think the timing belt has ever been changed and I have 250k on it! I know it hasnt been changed since 170k and the belt still looks pretty good to me!! Let me know what to look for,Pls advise, 'cause it it breaks while going down the road I will just have it towed to a junk yard! Thx...Coop

Take off one of the timing covers and look at the belt. If it is cracked, glazed, grooved, split, frayed or otherwise ugly looking it needs to be replaced.

Clay

PS: Mine was actually burning up against the stuck tensioner pully and smelled like burning rubber before I finally replaced it. The cracks were very deep.

Thats just it! It looks pretty darn good for what I could see, I took off one cover and looked and bumped the ignition a few times until I just about seen the whole belt and it looks great as far as I can see! This belt is Very Old, probably the original but not sure, it hasn't been replace in at least 7-8 years or 80,000 miles that I know of! Thanks!!...Coop <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

Then you better change it.It sucks to have it pop on you.You should do it every 60,000 miles whether it needs it or not.and do the water pump and tensioner assembly while your in there.

Timing belt isnt something to skimp on. Get it done ASAP. Like the last post stated replace the Water pump and tensioner bearing while your at it. Dont forget the Oring on the back of the Water pump housing. Good time to put in a new thermostat as well.

...and service the radiator, including a new cap, since you'll likely pull it to do the work. Also check the fan clutch. And by the sounds of the history, put on new radiator hoses too.

Here is another long term timing belt story. The 60k factory change interval seems more and more like a bunch of hogwash to me. Has anyone ever had a timing belt break on a V6?

However, I gotta admit. 250k mi with 15 years is way longer than I would ever go. What I am really surprised at is that his pulleys have not failed yet.

yeah my belt broke on mine.It had been about 70k since it was done.I was actually getting ready to do it,since i had just bought the truck i figured it was going to need it.Well the belt beat me.Snapped before I had a chance to replace it.Total on the truck is 221k I am in the market for a new engine, not because of failure just as a preventive mesaure I want to keep this truck for a long time.

All Sierra, Do you know what brand of belt you used that broke? Joel once mentioned that he had seen a a lot of non OEM belts break, but never said the brands. I always thought Gates and Goodyear were good brands.

Dont know what brand it was But I think I still have the belt. But my failure was more to do with the tensioner bearing it didnt look like it had ever been replaced. This time around I replaced it.
